ROFl. How stupid! What part of number of patent applications vs no. of actual patents granted do you NOT understand?

What part of talking about science in general you dont understand? Patents (especially granted in US only) doesnt show the real picture, its one of many little aspects. Try to squeeze in your brain - China is Top2 in the World by science output , and rapidly catching up with US.

Talking about near future:

The number of patents is still relatively a small step for us, and we don't need to expect someone with the sour grape mentality to have any rational thought.

Question: Among those number of patent applications, how many are actually granted? You bots are so "good" with numbers, I/we would like to see the actual number of patents GRANTED. Out of those patents, we would like to see how many are actually real innovations, real discoveries, real inventions!!

Quite often, a minor change to an existing design/product will be patented by the company to enlarge its patent portfolio and to protect its intellectual property rights. Most of these 'BS patent', as post 4 put it, are simply shelved and never used, except to occasionally trotted out to impress investors and to prevent others from achieving true innovations by threatening them with patent violations.

And the Chinese violated others' intellectual rights in order to build up their country's patent building boasting claim. I have been in the semicon industry longer than aviation and when China became the place for low cost labor manufacturing center, both the number of intellectual property rights violations by China and China's claim to various 'innovations' shot up in parallel. Coincident?

Both publications and critically acclaimed scientific articles are on the sharp rise. As I said earlier, there are many measurements of scientific growth, you picked the small aspect, I - big aspect. But all of them are just that - aspects of the big picture, none of them are end-all, be-all.

I dont care about US granted patents, and while patents are mentioned by OP, topic only interests me as a part of countries scientific progress. Its military forums, and what I care about:

1. Countries military power.
2. Economy, its ability to sustain military growth, and resilience to war attrition.
3. Overall scientific advancement, along with breakthroughs in weapons industry.

I personally dont care about China's (or US) social studies, patents, or newest silicons for woman implants If you so obsessed with patents and refuse to see the big picture, go to patents forums and have a field day

I think this patent thing ihas been discussed numerous times on this forum and it always end with the conclusion that all the domestic junk patent helps in bumping up the number of patent filled.. So more or less the number itself is worth junk..
