MANILA -- China and 10 other countries have offered assistance to the Philippines in relief operations since typhoon Ruby hit Eastern Visayas of the country's central part on Saturday night, a senior Philippine military official said on Sunday.

Apart from China, Australia, Japan, the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Britain have also signified their intention to assist the Philippines, according to Philippine Armed Forces Chief Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang.

"As regards the Multinational Coordinating Center (MNCC), we have already activated it. They are on board," Catapang said.

The MNCC was first activated when typhoon Yolanda devastated Eastern Visayas in November last year.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Executive Director Alexander Pama said the assistance offered includes personnel, resources and relief goods.

"We are now assessing the damages and on the base of protocols and policies, those assistance will be provided in accordance of the needs," said Pama.

The NDRRMC said on Sunday there was no casualty so far reported due to typhoon Ruby which however toppled electricity and communication lines in several provinces, leaving over 700,000 persons to evacuation centers.

As a Filipino of Chinese background (my grandfather's side of the family, and he's a wealthy businessman like moat Chinese-Filipinos), I would like to see my fellow countrymen accept aid from China.

Sadly, chauvinistic countrymen (they're the overly-nationalistic ones) don't accept Chinese aid, due to their insecure, inflated egos and irrational, illogical hate for Chinese.

He he he, there's quite a few Chinese-Filipinos in Cebu Province. I had the pleasure of getting to know many of them in my many trips there. Its interesting to see that most Filipinos of Chinese ancestry have Hakka or Cantonese background. I also find the union of Chinese and Filipino beauty rather captivating. :)

An example of Chinese-Filipino Beauty ;)

@Nihonjin1051
Are there many Cantonese in JP?

ALOT. Most Japanese-Chinese are Southern Chinese. Its only recently that there are Mandarin speakers immigrating to the country as international students. I wonder why tho. I think Cantonese are very apt to travel abroad eh? They succeed really well abroad too, i notice. In Southeast Asia the Southern Chinese (Teowchew, Hakka, Cantonese) are the elites there. I think in the West too, the pathfinders were always the Southern Chinese. Interesting right?

@Chinese-Dragon , do you know the reasons for this? Do they mention anything in Chinese history about this?

The reason they went abroad is because it was difficult finding jobs. For example plenty Hakka went to Suriname and many Cantonese found a job working on ships which traveled around the world. Plenty settled down in Western countries so that's why you see many Overseas Southern Chinese. Only these few years you see many from Mainland working or studying abroad.

If they want to do it, go directly to the area devastated, not through the PH government. The last time aid donations were sent here, nobody (save the politicians) knows where it went.

Is this really true, buddy? But over $2 billion was donated to Philippines, surely some went to help rebuild the devastated areas?

This news which was reported about three months ago may give you an idea.

There are even rumors that the politicians took the aid coming from other countries for themselves.

During this time of crisis we can see who is who. We have all our flaws. No country is exempted even the most powerful or 3rd powerful country...but during these times we have to put aside our indifference, political squabbles and alike. It is a time to show our humane side and not how powerful we are. The Philippines is badly hit by the typhoon Hagupit ... who knows what country would be the next victim of such calamity. Anyway with or without the help of China, the Filipinos will still survive.

Bob,

Please my personal condolences to the dead in the Philippines, and my sincere prayers for your country and people. Do happen to know what parts of the Philippines was hit?
