China monthly box office tops U.S. for first time

Indian films that "earned $100 billion" what are you smoking? The biggest earning movie world wide was avatar, and that grossed just under $2.8 billion world wide....thats 28 times PKs world wide gross. Major hollywood block busters have budgets approaching $250 million and can make over a billion in just a few weeks, bollywood films need to run for more then a month to gross $50-$80 million.

Get real.
sorry i mistyped it .....its million.

China monthly box office tops U.S. for first time

Math can be a frightening thing, especially if you’re a Hollywood studio exec invested in the continued predominance of American movies. Like most every other American industry, Hollywood looks east and sees a growing colossus in China, which has experienced year-over-year growth in the last two years of 27 and 36 percent. China’s movie business is thriving, and no one with an appreciation for numbers doubts that it will eventually eclipse the North American market.

But “eventually” just got a whole lot closer: In February, China’s monthly box-office topped the U.S. market for the first time.

The Hollywood Reporter, citing figures from the research firm Entgroup, determined that China grossed $650 million in February, a record monthly haul boosted by that country’s Lunar New Year holiday. The U.S. box office finished with $640 million. Of perhaps greater concern to American studios is the fact that the record Chinese month at the movies occurred mainly without the boost of Hollywood blockbusters. During the Chinese holiday period, their film authorities typically clear the path for their own domestic releases, and that strategy paid off. The top movie in February was The Man From Macau II, starring Chow Yun-fat, which grossed $104 million. Second, with $95 million, was Dragon Blade, starring Jackie Chan, John Cusack, and Adrien Brody. Third was the Chinese-French co-production, Wolf Totem, with $73 million, followed by Zhong Kui: Snow White and the Dark Crystal ($56 million) and the romance, Somewhere Only We Know ($44 million). The final Hobbit film (which opened in January) andMockingjay were the leading Hollywood blockbusters in China for the month.

China is currently experiencing explosive growth in the construction of movie theaters, with 15 new screens being added every day. Currently, there are approximately 23,600 screens in China, less than the 40,000 in the U.S., but 475 percent more than China had in 2008. At the current rate—and considering the potential of a billion-plus-person population—some analysts predict that the Chinese market will surpass North America in 2017. That date seems a whole lot closer now.

I heard old Chinese love Raj Kapoor, is this true?

Especially the film <Awara>. It goes into China before 1966, but Famous after 1976, because after the Culture Revolution the people find the film is very touching.
Now the favorite film from India in China is: <Three Idiots>. :)

This is partly true. Chinese absolutely loved the movie Awaara (流浪者)and its theme song Awara Hoon (拉兹之歌
). Put it this way, the movie would've broken the "box office" record if China had such a thing back in the 70's :yahoo:. Many old Chinese can even sing it by imitating the Hindi pronunciation. However, since there weren't many Indian movies at the time, I don't think the names of the actors registered in our audience as much.

That move Awaara is world famous for some reason. I've never seen it but it's known even in Eastern Europe. What is the appeal in in from a Chinese POV?

Personally I don't watch too many Indian movies. I found 3 idiots to be overrated, my favourite film is called K3G but you have to know Indian family culture deeply connect with it. Of the modern films, Haider is the best, it has only 1 song/dance sequence in it and is a modern adaptation of Hamlet.

Well, it is a very good movie, period. It enjoyed success not only in China, but in other Asian countries, in Africa and the Soviet Union as well ( Awara (1951 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).

The movie was made in 1951 but wasn't widely played in China until the late 70's at around the end of "the cultural revolution". The then Chinese government started to loosen some controls over imported movies. This movie was allowed because its theme is kind of in line the communist ideology. To the ordinary people, who have been fed up with the propaganda movies for years, the Indian movie brings a very different and refreshing style. It has great music too:)

Good that top 3 are Chinese films, I'd like to recommend snow girl and dark crystal.

.
China has about FOUR TIMES the population of the U.S. They'd should start being good at SOMETHING. Geez !!!:usflag:

.
Two of three top five movies uses western actors or co produced by westerners. Nothing to be proud of. Chinese movies have a long way to go.

Movies are propaganda, however innocuous the themes appear. It's good that Chinese movie-goers are increasingly shunning Hollywood offerings for domestic productions. American morality and ideals are corrupt and distasteful and it's only beneficial that Chinese public do not buy into US culture. China should embrace and celebrate Chinese morality and values, which to me have always been far superior to their Western counterparts.

We just hope our American directors don't bullshit themselves and try to promote Captain America to come to China and save the world. Typical bullshit Hollywood superhero. LOL

No one said you had to like Captain America. The second CA movie grossed almost 715 million USD worldwide. So obviously a lot of people liked the film. That film also debuted at number one in many territories.. including China.

No one is forcing you to watch it my friend.

The new Captain America box office success: Of the $715m cross, $455m is in international market. of those $455m, only $39m is cross in China. LOL

What is even more funny is that in order to hide the typical American superhero bullshit, you have to remove the title "Captain America" in the title to screen in place like Eastern Europe and Korea. LOL
