English.news.cn 2011-10-13 12:59:59

HONG KONG, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Computer and electronic device maker Lenovo, listed in both Hong Kong and New York, has replaced Dell to become the world's second largest personal computer company, Lenovo said Thursday.

Lenovo made the remarks in a statement, citing figures released by International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of business intelligence for the consumer technology market.

Following five quarters as the fastest-growing PC maker among the world's top vendors, the preliminary IDC data reported that Lenovo has achieved record market share of around 13.7 percent and record quarterly shipment volume of some 12.6 million units.

Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said his company had surpassed two competitors to capture the No. 2 spot in worldwide PCs in just two quarters and it was the highest rank that Lenovo has achieved in worldwide PC sales.

Given current competitive environment, the new achievement positioned Lenovo as a strong challenger to ultimately become the global market leader, Yang said in the statement.

"We are growing in the enterprise and the consumer space. And our customers know we are fully committed to the PC market for the long term," he said.

At the same time, the Chinese multinational would continue investing in innovative products that would help drive the convergence of technologies and services across all four screens -- smart phones, tablets, PCs and smart TV, Yang said.

"We must deliver a great user experience across all platforms to achieve our goal and become the leading personal technology company in the world."

Lenovo is a personal technology company and a global Fortune 500 company with annual sales worth 21 billion U.S. dollars. It serves customers in more than 160 countries and regions.

"Huawei P1S Smartphone is Crazy Thin
January 9th, 2012 by: Shane McGlaun

If you like your smartphones to have cool features and a cool design, the new Huawei Ascend P1 S might get your motor revving. The smartphone is hailed as the “world’s thinnest” and I can believe it at 6.68mm thick. You could stand that thing up sideways and have a hard time finding it.

g2x97.jpg

(Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the world's thinnest smartphone...the Huawei Ascend P1 S!)

The smartphone runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and has Gorilla Glass over the top to make it stronger. The screen is 4.3-inches wide and has 960 x 540 resolution. The processor is a dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460. The smartphone runs an 1800mAh battery and should last a long time. The device is not that wide either at 64.8mm.

The P1S smartphone will be offered in white, black, and pink colors. The rear camera is an 8MP unit and the front is a 1.3MP camera. The rear camera can capture 1080p video. If this thing floats your boat, it will hit the US in April. What carrier will have it and how much it will cost are unknown."

Huawei Smart AX M5300. The Smart AX MA5300 platform has been instrumental to Huawei's success in the global DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) market, but the MA5600 series, designed to support more bandwidth-intensive services such as triple/quad play, is the company's flagship DSLAM.

Can Achieve Access Rate of One Gbps per Twisted Pair

Shenzhen, China, Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) provider, today announced that it successfully launched the industry’s first Giga DSL (Digital Subscriber line) prototype. The Giga DSL system employs time division duplex (TDD) to achieve a total upstream and downstream rate of 1,000 Mb/s over a single twisted pair.

In order to address obstacles related to limited bandwidth of FTTB (Fiber to the Building)/FTTC(Fiber to the Curb) and difficulty in deploying FTTH (Fiber to the Home) drop cables – so that users can enjoy bandwidth-hungry services such as IPTV and HDTV – optical fiber access points need to be located closer to users. While, 100 Mbp/s-plus ultra-broadband access can be made available relatively quickly by utilizing legacy copper line resources, providing 1,000 Mbp/s bandwidth within 100 meters of twisted pairs using DSL technology is more complex.

By using low-power spectral density in-signal transmission, Huawei’s Giga DSL prototype reduces radiation interference and power consumption, and provides a total upstream and downstream rate of one Gb/s within 100 meters, and 500 Mb/s-plus within 200 meters – making it a cost-effective option for telecom operators building ultra-broadband access networks.

Giga DSL is a next-generation access technology solution that's growing quickly. In 2011, ITU-T set up a G.fast project team dedicated to formulating new standards for ultra-speed access at short distances, the aim being to achieve 500 Mb/s access rate per twisted pair within 100 meters. Huawei has actively participated in the work of the team and has become a major technical contributor, having recently worked to incorporate TDD-OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) as a G.fast modulation mode.

Dr. Long Guozhu, Huawei’s Principal Expert of DSL technology, said, “Huawei has taken the lead in developing a Giga DSL prototype because of our rich capabilities and industry-leading technical strengths in access networks. It was inevitable that spectrum expansion would help us improve the rate of a twisted pair at a short distance, but after the spectrum is expanded, a technical issue appears: how to design the high-speed physical layer and high-frequency analog front end (AFE). To tackle this issue, Huawei’s FBB Innovation Lab used the core solution TDD-OFDM, which simplifies the physical-layer architecture and the AFE design, while at the same time makes it possible to be downward compatible with traditional ADSL/VDSL2 technologies.”

Huawei also recently announced the successful development of the world’s first node level vectoring (NLV) prototype. Huawei’s vectoring product provides 100 Mbps access over a single twisted pair in FTTC/FTTB, and has been tested and commercially trialed with many leading telecom operators. This, along with the company’s latest prototype, Giga DSL, signifies that DSL technology still has great potential to meet the requirements of broadband users for ultra-high-speed access in the future.

Huawei’s advances within Giga DSL will enhance the capabilities of the company’s SingleFAN broadband access solution. Its SingleFAN solution and related offerings are now servicing over one third of the world’s broadband users with ultra-broadband access services."

13:38, July 22, 2010

China's first ARJ21 regional jet is expected to be delivered in 2011, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), which develops domestically-made jumbo jets and sells the ARJ21 aircraft, reported during the Farnborough International Air Show on July 21.

ARJ21 is a new type of short-to-medium-range, turbofan-powered regional jet independently developed by China. It has 70 to 100 seats and a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles. Designed in accordance with international airworthiness standards, the aircraft can meet requirements such as takeoff and landing in plateau or high-temperature airports.

According to COMAC, the ARJ21 regional jet had its first test flight on Nov. 28, 2008 and has entered the airworthiness certification and certificate application stage. Four ARJ21 regional jets have participated in test flights with a cumulative flight time of more than 600 hours. Confirmed overseas and domestic orders and orders of intent have amounted to 240 and the first aircraft is scheduled to be delivered in 2011.

The pre-sale price of the new ARJ21 regional jet is 27 million to 29 million U.S. dollars, giving the ARJ21 regional jet a price advantage over its peers in the international market.

COMAC also noted that China's jumbo jet project will enter the engineering development phase next year. The suppliers for the project have generally been selected after key suppliers of the airframe structure, power units and system devices, materials and standard components were fixed.

Equipment for the C919 jumbo jets will be supplied by 13 international aviation manufacturing enterprises. Meanwhile, over 30 domestic enterprises have passed the preliminary material supply reviews and more than 50 domestic enterprises have been selected as potential standard component suppliers.

COMAC added that the overall technical plan, manufacturing plan and customer service plan for the C919 jumbo jets will be compiled in 2010. The C919 jumbo jets are scheduled to conduct the first test flights in 2014 and be delivered in 2016.

"1,000 Genomes Project releases first phase data
10:00, June 22, 2010

The 1,000 Genomes Project, which aims to produce an extensive catalog of human genetic variations, started to release data from a pilot phase Monday.

The project, a collaboration started in 2008 among research groups in the U.S., the United Kingdom, China and Germany, would support medical research and throw new light on human evolution, said Wang Jun, project coordinator of the Chinese party and also deputy head of the Shenzhen Branch of the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI).

More than 50 trigabites of 8,000 billion base pairs of human DNA had been mapped and included in a public database, he said.

Researchers could gain free access to the data through three websites, including the 1,000 Genomes website (www.1000genomes.org), Wang said.

When completed, the database would contain human genetic information from the genomes of 2,500 people from 27 populations around the world.

BGI is responsible for mapping the genomes of 400 people of Mongoloid races and participants from the African populations.

Wang said the pilot project phase comprised three parts:

-- detailed comprehensive mapping of the genomes of six people from two core families;

-- less detailed comprehensive mapping of the genomes of 179 people;

-- mapping of the 1,000 genome exon (a DNA sequence that codes information for protein synthesis) of 700 people.

The results helped to evaluate the efficiency and effect of different mapping strategies. They will also help researchers to look closer at the genomes associated with human diseases.
