China Launches ‘Vanguard 2010’

BEIJING, Aug 3, 2010 (AFP) - China launched large-scale air defence exercises on Tuesday -- the latest in a series of drills carried out amid US concerns about Beijing's increasing military assertiveness.

More than 10,000 defence personnel and seven different types of military aircraft are taking part in the drills in the eastern province of Shandong and the central province of Henan, the official China News Service said.

The exercises, codenamed "Vanguard 2010," will involve emergency evacuation, war planning, and reconnaissance and early warning, the report said. They are due to last five days.

The exercises -- aimed at ensuring preparedness for the defence of Beijing in a potential air raid -- will include one live-fire drill and will take place in real-time war conditions without any previous rehearsal, it added.

The exercises come hot on the heels of large naval and air drills held on China's southeast coast last week, just as South Korea and the United States conducted their own naval exercises in the region, opposed by Beijing.

A large group of submarines and warships from the People's Liberation Army Navy fired guided missiles in the South China Sea and tested anti-missile air defence systems.

The United States and China's neighbours have expressed concerns about what is perceived as Beijing's increasing military assertiveness.

In recent years Beijing has poured money into its once-backward People's Liberation Army, with a string of big-budget increases that have funded the development of a host of advanced missiles, jet fighters and other weaponry.

Admiral Mike Mullen, the top US military officer, said last month that China's military had made "a fairly significant investment in high-end equipment" including satellites, aircraft and anti-ship missiles.

He called the move a "strategic shift, where they are moving from a focus on their ground forces to focus on their navy, and their maritime forces and their air force," adding he was "concerned."

China has also become increasingly vocal about territorial claims such as those in the South China Sea and over Taiwan, which it views as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.

US officials worry that Beijing's more assertive stance in the Pacific Ocean could undercut America's long-dominant naval power in Asia.

China maintains that its army build-up is purely for national defence and poses no threat to other countries.

It's aweful~~~~

Why are they concerned with Air defence drills. They are by nature defensive and not offensive.

Awesome! Time is near when USA would have to accept Chinese dominance in its region. That will mark the beginning of demise for used to be great uncle sam.

I just hope China keeps its forces within its territory and build friendly ties with its neighbors  We don't want another USA in the making :what:

This region is Asia and Asian countries have rights to be free and use its resources. America is coming from another continent and still want it should be dominating over the countries of this part of the world.

I really want China to expand its influence in the region as this will cancel out the American influence here. I also pray and wish that India wouldn't fall in the American camp and in the chase of power overlooks the regional interests. Who could stop this region if Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Bangladesh all on the same plane. And in the list of countries that I have mentioned above, only India seems to astray from the regional interests. So problem is not Chinese growing strength, but Indian's unacceptability of this strength which is causing cracks in regional interests.

"This baby makes ASEAN look like chumps. And given the state of NATO it could potentially be stronger, if things continue to go the way they do."

ASEAN is an economic organization. They don't co-operate militarily. In fact they are always sensitive on arms build up in their immediate neighbour. There are Pro-China and also Pro-USA camps in ASEAN.

I said this tongue in cheek. I know they aren't really comparable.

great news... i guess thats why PAF IL78 is there in China...

possible for Asian countries to come together, but Pak and China also need to accept a rising India and its growing strength...

the major difference is Asia has number of big powers(and not just one)...they all need to undestand each other n shed ego to try to be numbero uno...
