China launches exascale supercomputer prototype

Xinhua Published: 2018-08-06 08:54:40

China on Sunday put into operation a prototype exascale computing machine, the next-generation supercomputer, according to the developers.

The Sunway exascale computer prototype was developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology (NRCPC), the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan, east China's Shandong Province, and the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (Qingdao).

The NRCPC led the team that developed Sunway TaihuLight, crowned the world's fastest computer two years in a row at both the 2016 and 2017 International Supercomputing Conferences held in Frankfurt, Germany.

"The Sunway exascale computer prototype is very much like a concept car that can run on road," said Yang Meihong, director of the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan.

"We expect to build the exascale computer in the second half of 2020 or the first half of 2021," said Yang.

Another prototype exascale supercomputer Tianhe-3 passed the acceptance tests on July 22. Its final version is expected to come out in 2020.

The two prototypes marked a further step towards China's successful development of the next-generation supercomputer.

Supercomputers are changing people's life in fields such as weather forecast, calculation of ocean currents, financial data analysis, high-end equipment manufacturing, and car collision simulation, said Pan Jingshan, deputy director of the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan.

Pan said the new-generation supercomputers will provide strong support to scientific research in more fields.

An exascale computer is able to execute a quintillion calculations per second. In China, prototypes are being developed by three teams led by the NRCPC, Dawning Information Industry C. (Sogon), and National University of Defense Technology (NUDT).

The United States and Japan are also speeding up the development of the exascale supercomputer, expecting to unveil it in as early as 2021.

Made in China 2025 pays off.

. .
This system has been designed in such a way that it is easily expandable from 1E to 10E.

Two done, one to go.

Now get a move on, Sugon. :D:D

Four supercomputing centres in Tianjin, Jinan, Shanghai and Shenzhen have plans in place to host E-machine between 2020-2022.

Interesting, only God knows where science is taking us.

.
Wow, I hope we will see some numbers from these prototypes soon!:china:

I think only science knows :partay:

So, the chip embargo don't stop our development, hope USA don't lift the embargo. How many jobs do the embargo creat for USA? :coffee:

US should definitely continue the embargo. Otherwise, some stupid politicians will think the US can be reliable partner and let's buy from them instead of doing it ourselves the hard way.

Of course, joking a little.

No stupid government can come up with a plan called Made in China 2025.

US economic warfare only speeds up what is unavoidable.

Science is unknowing my friend and is only a tool for the knowing to see beyond what has already been written.

I have had the privilege of working with top International researchers and the common theme was they know so little and and are only discovering God's creations and rules. The more they find and learn the more doors open to vast and complex problems and unknowns.

Before trade war and ZTE government don't believe USA, now CCP of course don't, the change is after trade war, normal Chinese and Chinese Companies join the Distrust-to-USA, the side effect is chronic.

Of course, not only Chinese should avoid to use USA products, especially their Net service and core equipment, other countries should do, today they can start the trade war with China and embargo on China, one day, they will do that on you. You can not trust Chinese, but also don't trust American.

gonna be very hard. china is very corrupt. just look at how facebook got approved to start their brininess in china without permission from the higher up. it didn't last long, but you can smell a lot of a$$kissing & bribing going on with local officials. i can smell similar thing going on with google in china..

Corruption is everywhere, and whether facebook or Google enter in China market, it is not problem, obey the rule, Government didn't say they can't enter in China market if they obey the rule and laws.

I guess the government just teasing them. Just as with the decades-old credit card issuing game played with Visa and Master Card.

Umm.... No.

Firstly, it is ludicrous to talk about 10E, when Chinese machines have barely touched 0.1E right now, and these ones are few Petaflops.

Second, three "prototypes" have been built. How many will be approved forwards hasn't yet been decided.

Finally, these four centers are all lobbying for machines. Their plans are all lobbying activity. And understandably so. This doesn't mean that everyone will win in their effort to get a machine.

Of the top 500 Super computers in the Top 500 list, 476 are based on Intel chips alone, with the second being IBM with 14.

Chinese chips are not commercial, they don't have an established eco system. They also lag in software development.

These are all hard facts, that you need to face, instead of just drumming unnecessarily about premature victory.

Once, there were nowhere for Chinese chips, now there are, not good start? of course, we should thank embargo from USA, isn't it?

Market decide anything, if USA "abandon" China chip market, you think the huge market can't foster another "intel"? Chinese is not low IQ.

China to establish national commission for quantum computing standards

2018-08-07 11:01:19 Xinhua Editor : Gu Liping

A Chinese national technological commission for quantum computing and measurement is under construction to promote industrialization of quantum technology.

The commission will be built by Jinan Institute of Quantum Technology, and Shandong Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision. Preparation for the commission is estimated to take six months.

Quantum computing, measurement, and telecommunication have developed fast in recent years. Despite this, the quantum industries still lack official standards.

Quantum communication uses quantum entanglement of photons to make sure nobody taps into the line, which can corrupt the signal and potentially allow sensitive information to be leaked.

Jinan, capital of Shandong Province, has established a quantum telecom network, providing a secure connection for communication between the Communist Party and government bodies.

The city unveiled a plan to build a quantum valley in May this year. By 2025, it aims to have an industry cluster worth over tens of billions of dollars.

A 2,000 km quantum communication line in China known as the Jing-Hu (Beijing-Shanghai) Trunk Line, connects Beijing, Jinan, Hefei, and Shanghai. The line is the world's first trunk line for secure quantum telecommunications.

It is connected to the world's first quantum satellite, which was launched by China in August 2016. The satellite is nicknamed "Micius," after a fifth century B.C. Chinese philosopher and scientist who has been credited as the first person to conduct optical experiments.
