China ignores Pakistan's concerns, approves Indian basmati imports

. .
I have to laugh at the pathetic and primitive mentality of Indians who see everything as either with them or against them.
China is a huge consumer of rice and recently they have opened rice exports to Japan where much of the farmland has been contaminated due to nuclear reactor collapse. It was only natural that rice demand will now increase in China and being a large consumer, even of Pakistan was to export all its rice to China that will not full fill the Chinese demand. Therefore, China will need more sources of supply. This is simple economics.

No where it said Pakistan pleaded China to not allow Indian imports when Pakistan itself exports a huge quantity of rice to India. Its simple..Pakistani rice tends to be one of the best quality rice in the world and with such AAA grade products the demand will always outrun the supply be it in India or China....

for too long, Pakistani government (as well as Trade Development Authority) have ignored the issue of threats - some that are in our control and some that are NOT (e.g. what countries decide; or even things like exchange rate policies of countries like Viet Nam)....i already mentioned that we need to learn and adopt best practices approach to become more price competitive.

The devaluation of Vietnamese currency may affect the price of rice in international market. That is one threat we can't do anything about.

Another often unspoken about problem is hindustanis living abroad (especially in Dubai)...what they do is to purchase basmati rice from Pakistani exporters and after value addition they export it to other countries on high price with their own brand name. *facepalm*
the *facepalm* is on you bro.....
We dont need to buy pakistani basmati, we have 10 million tons surplus!:enjoy:

Not of such high quality at better value. After tougher Saudi-UAE trade rifts in regards to dumping of goods in Saudi market via Dubai freezone, now some India rice which is packed in JAFZA and exported to KSA reads "Rice Origin: Pakistan" on the packaging.
If i come across one at super market I will take a pic and post here.

Pakistani rice tends to be of higher quality and cheaper while a large harvest of Indian rice is low quality...

Still numbers do matter...
The entire pakistani rice yield is 10 million tons which hardly satisfies it's population....how will you export it??
We on the other hand have 10 million tons surplus of just Bsmati, thus are free to export it...
And you have no source which says pakistani basmati is better than Indian one...

. .
It will hurt Pakistan in the near term but it will force Pak rice mills to improve their wares and eventually will be good for the Pak economy in the long run.

Exactly, that is the point here..
So how do you consider it possible for Pakistan to satisfy demands of Chinese market.
Hense the reason for Chinese to have more sources...

facepalm for all indians thinking China ignored Pakistani pleas!

But Pakistan is a Roti eating country and you guys don't eat boiled rice with curry dishes, your only rice consumption is Biryani which you don't eat daily.

What a government of incompetent bastards we have in Pakistan.

India cannot use Basmati as it is sole property of Pakistan.

as far as indian rice are concern . There are dealers in Dubai who take tons of rice every day from Pakistan and tag them sometimes as product of india and our bureaucracy is effing busy in eating Pakistan rather than protecting it interests.

In sweden Pakistani Rice is expensive but so is the quality of the Rice. If you go for low quality the price will be low obviously and u can easily buy Indian (Basmati type Super 2000) .

If China has opened Rice trade for India then its of no issue to use rather we can compete with them . We already have much order that our mills in Pakistan cannot fulfills. We are barter trading hundreds of tons of Rice with iran , exporting to Dubai,Afghanistan and further to CAS .

It varys in Pakistan. I am a agriculturist. I like to eat many types of dishes made from Basmati Rice not just biryani.

ans still in Sweden i have rice once or twice a week............

BEIJING: China has made a rare trade move opening up import channels for Indian basmati rice although it might hurt exports of similar produce from its close ally, Pakistan. According to sources, this is a politically sensitive move that suggests that Beijing is no more willing to walk the extra mile to protect Pakistan's interests.

China has been importing Pakistani aromatic rice for the past few years. Islamabad is known to have been persuading China not to allow Indian basmati because it will affect its already small export basket. What is more, Pakistan has begun to push China to buy more of its cotton yarn after New Delhi slapped a partial ban on cotton exports.

Though New Delhi and Beijing signed the basmati protocol 2006, it has taken China over five years to give the green signal because the Pakistan factor played a role in its thinking, sources said.

The first Chinese delegation to visit India to examine the product for quarantine purposes was in 2009. Indian officials have earlier complained that China's approval process is very time consuming and it takes years to obtain approval for one agriculture product.

"It is a hard won achievement. We expect this decision will lead to opening up the Chinese market for other agricultural goods," Nagraj Naidu, counselor (trade and commerce) at the Indian embassy in Beijing told TNN. "We hope Indian companies use the opportunity to build brands and develop the market."

Despite political backing, Pakistani basmati suppliers have not been able to make a dent in the Chinese market because of failures at the branding and marketing areas. The challenge lies in taking the product into the homes of upper class Chinese and expatriates instead of focusing only on the restaurant industry, sources said.

"India has a strong brand as the producer of 70 per cent of world's supply of basmati," Naidu said. A recent convention of the food and hospital industry in Shanghai evoked strong response from buyers when freshly cooked Indian basmati filled the auditorium with its aroma, he said.

China buys rice from Vietnam and Thailand in vast quantities. Though the Chinese market for rice is a vast one, Indian can hardly meet the demand because it has little surplus in the non-basmati category of rice, officials said.
