China holds US responsible for Afghanistan schoolgirl deaths

Published: 11:31am, 10 May, 2021

China has blamed the US withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan for a surge in attacks, after multiple explosions at a girl’s school in Kabul on Saturday killed more than 60 people, predominantly female students.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China was “shocked” by the attacks and “deeply saddened” by the death toll. She also called on Washington to pull out troops “in a responsible manner”.

“It needs to be pointed out that the recent abrupt US announcement of complete withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan has led to a succession of explosive attacks throughout the country, worsening the security situation and threatening peace and stability as well as people’s lives and safety,” Hua said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website on Sunday.

US leaves China a Xinjiang terrorism problem with its Afghanistan exit

“China calls on foreign troops in Afghanistan to take into full account the security of people in the country and the region, pull out in a responsible manner and avoid inflicting more turmoil and suffering on the Afghan people.”

There have been growing fears in both Afghanistan and its neighbour China of an emerging security vacuum as US and Nato troops complete their final military withdrawal. The final 2,500 to 3,500 American troops have begun leaving Afghanistan and will be out by September, after two decades of deployment there.

The US withdrawal has already led to a surge in fighting between a resurgent Taliban and Afghan security forces. The heavily Shiite Dasht-e-Barchi area, where the Saturday attack took place, has been frequently hit by Islamic State militants. No one has yet claimed responsibility.

In her statement, Hua said China would continue its support for the Afghanistan government, without going into details. “China opposes violent extremism in all its manifestations. We will continue our firm support for the Afghan government and people in their efforts to combat terrorism and safeguard national security and stability. We also stand ready to work with the international community to help Afghanistan realise peace at an early date.”

Observers said Beijing was unlikely to station troops in Afghanistan, but might work with other countries in the region to reduce the security risk to China. In 2018, Afghan troops were trained in China, which helped them set up a mountain brigade aimed at countering possible attacks by al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

Beijing has long feared that instability in Afghanistan would give ground to Islamic fundamentalism that would spill over into China’s predominantly Muslim Xinjiang region.

Well, Afghanistan is your neighbour, so you guys should also contribute in their security then. Just staying outside as an observer and hoping the U.S/west will keep doing the work for you is not a sound strategy i suppose. You can only control what you do. Not what others do. So guess it's time the Chinese got more involved as well? Or just keep out of it and hope for the best(i.e Uygurs extremists wont use the country as a staging outpost for attacks in China). Guess sometimes policy of non-interference is not always sustainable.

Really surprised. China should be happy the US is pulling out, however it does it.

amazing ain't it!! a mere 2,500 American troops kept peace in Afghanistan and the nation went straight to hell in a hand basket as soon as we left. We so stronk :usflag:

Well, the Afghans want to be the one the make thier country whatever they wish it to be. They got their wish. We all should respect that.

Should've withdrawn on the condition of peace between TB and ANA.

Isn't that for TB and ANA to work out?

Why WILL YOU BE SURPRISED bro? If you look into geo politics properly, you will understand that China has always been favourable for the U.S/West to continue their military presence in Afghanistan, since it helps keeps the country together, builds up the central administration and limits the spread of extremism especially towards Chinas vulnerable muslim state Xijiang, since western powers encouraged more education for Afghan females, a moderate society geared more towards a modern developed society and the stabilization of the country(funny enough it's exactly what the Soviets wanted to achieve during their invasion of the country which we fought them against. lol ) . This are all things the Chinese will want to see in Afghanistan as well, since this helps reduce the threat of Uygurs extremists finding a fertile ground/sympathisers in a lawless islamists extremist Afghanistan. Moreover all this would have been done with the U.S spending it's own money/resources/equipment and manpower without China spending a cent. lol So why will they want the US to leave? You guys should try and look at things in a more neutral perspective and avoid falling into the zero sum games of looking at things in a simple way of U.S vs China and assuming any US presence will be resented by the Chinese. lol That's not how things always works. Interests sometimes changes and are often more complex/intertwined.
What would be "responsible" withdrawal here? Sooner? Later?
FOREVER

You fellows need to understand the double meaning of what the Chinese are saying. The Chinese are basically saying that it is the US or its affiliated group who is sponsoring these attacks. The Chinese are accusing the US of this instability.

@mike2000 is back

There is an attempt to encircle China; increased pressure on China in the Pacific and generally the beating of war drums. The australians are openly debating on war with China. In this enviroment the removal of US forces from Afghanistan, from a Chineses prospective would be desirable.

Yes, it would assist pre-uigher forces to assemble in Afghanistan, but it would be a small price to pay.

.
Would they be kind enough to present any proof of such an allegation?

Probably all those innocent kids killed are a good enough proof. US has a history of barbarism. Example, those wonderful things US did in Vietnam.
