Chinese nuclear giant continues to expand overseas cooperation

Source: Xinhua Published: 2018/3/3

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), one of the country's two leading nuclear power companies, is stepping up its overseas cooperation, the chairperson said Saturday.

Progress is being made in cooperation with CNNC's local partners in countries like Pakistan, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Ghana and the United States, CNNC chairperson Wang Shoujun said on the sidelines of the annual session of the country's top political advisory body.

In 2017, the CNNC completed the construction on the No. 4 unit of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant in Pakistan. The company also reached an agreement with its Pakistani partner to built another nuclear power unit at the Chashma plant using the Hualong One technology.

The total installed capacity of CNNC's nuclear projects in Pakistan has so far reached 4.63 million kilowatts while the installed capacity in operation has exceeded 1.3 million kilowatts, said Wang, who is also a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

"These projects have effectively alleviated local power shortages and boosted the country's economic development," he said.

Contracts have been signed for nuclear projects in Argentina while the CNNC and its Saudi Arabian partner have agreed to push forward cooperation on uranium and thorium resources.

In Ghana, the CNNC has helped convert a local highly-enriched uranium nuclear reactor into a low-enriched one.

Last year, the CNNC signed a joint venture agreement with TerraPower, LLC to form the Global Innovation Nuclear Energy Technology Co., Ltd. to work together on the Travelling Wave Reactor technology, marking a new stage in China-US nuclear cooperation, Wang added.

The CPPCC started its annual session Saturday, with more than 2,100 political advisors gathering to discuss the country's major political, economic, and social issues.

Zimbabwe commissions Chinese-built power plant
Xinhua, March 29, 2018

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday commissioned the 533-million-U.S. dollar Kariba South Hydro Power expansion project, arguably the country's biggest power development project since independence in 1980.

The project is expected to ease power shortages for the country that has faced perennial power shortages due to ageing plants and has had to rely on imports to plug the shortfall.

The project, which entailed the addition of 2x150 MW units, was done by China's hydro power engineering and construction firm, Sinohydro from 2014.

The first unit was completed and started feeding into the national grid in December 2017 while the test run for the second unit was completed two weeks ago.

The expansion project has lifted the power plant's installed capacity from 750 MW to 1,050 MW, making it the country's biggest power plant at present.

Mnangagwa said the completion of the project was an exciting development for the country.

"I am so pleased as I talk to Zesa engineers and their colleagues from China that they worked together from day one...and then the implementation of designs and project they have worked harmoniously to achieve this feat.

"It's a great wonder and it shows what we can achieve as a government in collaboration with other institutions to access technology from our friends. We now have 300 MW transmitted into our grid henceforth which we will deduct from our importation of power. This is the way to go," Mnangagwa said.

He thanked China for providing Zimbabwe with state-of-the-art power engineering and technology.

"We assure you that our engineers and technicians are going to maintain this asset for the benefit of our country," he said.

"The cost of this project is around 533 million dollars and it's money well spend, " he addded.

China's machinery giant eyes world's top three position by 2025

Source:Xinhua Published: 2018/11/29

Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG), China's largest construction machinery manufacturer, aims to become one of the world's top three makers in sales by 2025, the China Daily reported Thursday.

The company aims to raise its global ranking in the sector from the current sixth to fifth by 2020, and is confident to meet its goal of higher global ranking, said Wang Min, chairman of the group.

The top three makers in 2018 are Caterpillar, Komatsu and Hitachi Construction Machinery, according to industry information provider KHL.

During the four-day Bauma China International Trade Fair, which is being held in Shanghai until Friday, XCMG is presenting world leading machines including the world's biggest rotary drilling rig and the world's largest all-terrain crane.

Wang said the group has been allocating about 5 percent of its sales revenue to research and development for many years, and it has more than 6,000 R&D staff.

Consistent reform and innovation have made XCMG grow from a company with an annual revenue of around 300 million yuan (43.2 million US dollars) into the nation's leading machinery giant earning 100 billion yuan a year, Wang said.

In the first 10 months of the year, XCMG posted 91.9 billion yuan in sales revenue, and its profit surged 76.2 percent year on year.

As long as China continues to empower the once dominated and colonized countries, no US-led Western sanctions can impede the momentum of its growth.

In fact, US sanctions and crazy accusations help by closing down China's market to them, and leaving room for developing nations.

Sales of major heavy equipment including digging machines and loaders witnessed double-digit growth in China last year, pointing to improving vitality in the broader economy.

Lyu Ying, deputy secretary general of the China Construction Machinery Association, said the construction machinery sector was vigorous in 2018.

A total of 203,420 digging machines were sold, up 45 percent year on year and registering a new record, according to data from 25 manufacturers. Most of the sales were made in the domestic market, with exports accounting for less than 10 percent of the total.

Sales of loaders gained 22 percent to 119,000 in 2018. Other products including crane trucks, heavy-duty trucks and bulldozers also reported robust sales.

The eye-catching growth was mainly driven by national projects and equipment upgrades of construction companies, Lyu said. In the first 11 months, combined revenues in the sector saw a forecast-beating 12 percent increase and hit a new high.

China is accelerating approval of infrastructure projects to stabilize investment and bolster the economy.

The top economic planner has approved construction of seven projects, such as inter-city railroads and a hydroelectric station, with a total investment of 485 billion yuan (71.75 billion U.S. dollars) this year.

Given the government emphasis on infrastructure, Lyu predicts the sector will maintain steady expansion this year, with total sales growth at 10 percent.

NANJING -- A large Chinese-made dredging vessel set sail Tuesday from East China's Jiangsu province for Saudi Arabia to support its offshore oil exploration.

The 138-meter-long, 28-meter-wide dredger named Xin Hai Xu can dig as deep as 36 meters under the sea floor and dredge 6,500 cubic meters per hour, according to its builder, Jiangsu Haixin Shipping Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.

For the next two and half years, the vessel will help build two artificial islands and carry out waterway dredging operations for offshore oil and gas exploration in Saudi Arabia, said Zhang Bibo, head of technology with the company.

Zhang said that after completing its mission, the vessel will continue to provide dredging services in the Middle East, especially for countries along the Belt and Road.

China has developed nearly 100 such dredging vessels, which have become important equipment serving at ports and terminals of countries along the Belt and Road, Zhang added.

China's Excavator Sales Are on Track for Record High This Year

(Yicai Global) April 9 -- China's excavator sales soared 15.7 percent on the year last month, and could be set to create a new record high this year amid increased demand from infrastructure projects and overseas buyers.

Twenty-five major manufacturers sold 44,300 units last month, China Securities Journal reported, citing data from the China Construction Machinery Association Excavating Machinery Branch. Exports soared 47.9 percent to 2,377 pieces of equipment sold, while domestic sales grew 14.3 percent to 41,900.

China's excavator sector is going to hit a peak period this year, according to a recent Sinolink Securities analysis. Sales should hit a record high in 2019 as the growth rate of downstream infrastructure investment bottoms out and demand for real estate becomes more optimistic, it said.

The 25 key producers in the machinery association's data shifted a total 74,800 excavators over the first quarter, up 24.5 percent on the year. Some 69,300 of those sold domestically, a 23.9 percent gain, while exports shot up 31.9 percent to 5,450.

The figures did not give a specific breakdown on export details, but overseas shipping of Chinese excavators has been on the climb since last year. Sany Heavy Industry's forecast its global revenue would climb 5.1 percent in 2018 to CNY6.1 billion (USD907 million), according to its interim report that year. It was operating much more smoothly in international markets and sales to European and American markets were a major contributor to the gain, it said.

Another factor helping the industry has been China's Belt and Road Initiative, according to a research report from the China Construction Machinery Association. Many major excavator makers have benefitted from the scheme, a multi-continent trade and infrastructure route devised by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, per the report.

The firms either partner up with Chinese construction firms working in Belt and Road countries, acquire local producers based in these nations, or set up their own factories overseas, the association added.

Chinese refinery becomes Kyrgyzstan's second largest taxpayer
By Wu Guoxiu, Si Nan

Abstract: China and Kyrgyzstan have cooperated on various projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). An oil refinery -- one of China's biggest investments in Kyrgyzstan -- is said to have greatly contributed to local income and employment.

Two hours away from the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek is China's largest investment project in Kyrgyzstan -- the Zhongda China Petrol Company.

The refinery was born from 500 million U.S. dollars' worth of backing from a Chinese company. It processes crude oil imported by rail from Russia and Kazakhstan, as well as a small amount from Kyrgyzstan itself.

"In 2008, our manager found that this country didn't have a modern oil refinery. Then, through contact with the government, we decided to build this factory. Since it began operation in 2014, it has helped stabilize local oil prices… significantly easing their troubles with oil usage", says Shi Jianguo, deputy manager of Zhongda China Petrol Company.

The Chinese-invested refinery paid the Kyrgyz government 43 million U.S. dollars last year, making it the country's second largest taxpayer. It's also one of the nation's largest employers, hiring over 2,000 locals.

Over 80 percent of the employees are locals, including technicians. The company used to send staff to China for technical and language training. 27-year-old Salbarov Esen studied in China for a year before working on safety maintenance.

"I work here because this plant is very close to my home, and the pay is very handsome. I check on the equipment every two hours to see if the pressure levels, oil levels, and all indexes are stable and working well", he said.

The company's refined oil products make up almost 40 percent of the local market. The company says the refinery has helped reduce the average price of gasoline by almost half.
