China has handled the coronavirus pandemic better than one could have imagined, said Fareed Zakaria, leading foreign affairs expert in the United States, in exclusive interview on Friday.
A total of 81,620 people have been infected with Covid-19 in Mainland China, while the death toll is at 3,322. The number of cases has topped 1 million globally, with at least 52,000 deaths.
"If the world manages to stay still for 14 days, the novel cronavirus will die," Fareed Zakaria said while speaking to India Today TV's Rahul Kanwal.
Zakaria said that theoritacally it was posisble as the virus will not be able to transmit further, however, since it was not a practical solution, "everybody should strife to come as close to it as possible".
"If you look at the countries where they have suceeded [in arresting coronavirus outbreak] so far, like South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and even China, there is a real sense that you have to stop the process of transmission," Fareed Zakaria said, adding that the process can be stopped only if each person adopts the attitude that they have to stop it.
"You may think you are fine but you may spread to someone who is not fine," the analyst said.
Fareed Zakaria also said US President Donald Trump did not see coronavirus as a big problem for a very long time. He said that Donald Trump is likely to face an economic shock.
He added that the United States, that was on the forefront while fighting earlier global health crisis such as ebola, swine flu, seems to be completely absent in the present Covid-19 crisis.
