China’s biggest Long March-5 rocket installed, launch expected later this month or early August
Riyaz ul Khaliq |17.07.2020
China is preparing to launch its first Mars mission and has readied Long March-5 carrier rocket at the launch center on Friday, local media reported.
The first Mars exploration mission of China -- Tianwen-1 -- is aimed to “complete orbiting, landing and roving in one mission, and to obtain scientific exploration data on Mars”, China National Space Administration said in a statement to Xinhua news.
The fourth Long March-5 rocket was vertically transported to the Wenchang Space Launch Center in south China's Hainan province today.
The Long March-5 carrier rocket is China's largest launch vehicle. And it is the first time the rocket would be put to “practical use” and is expected to send the Mars probe into the Earth-Mars transfer orbit.
Earlier, the rocket was tested three times.
The Mars mission is expected to be launched in late July or early August.
After the propellant is injected into the rocket, several tests and inspections will be done.
It is after every 26 months that Mars and the Earth come closer to each other as the distance between the two is about 55 million kilometers (34.1 million miles).

WENCHANG, Hainan, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The fourth Long March-5 rocket, to be used to launch China's first Mars exploration mission, was vertically transported to the launching area at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in south China's Hainan Province on Friday.
The carrier rocket, coded as Long March-5 Y4, is planned to be launched in late July or early August, according to the China National Space Administration.
Space engineers have conducted a general assembly and tests on the rocket, after it was transported to Wenchang at the end of May.
It took about two hours to vertically transport the large rocket to the launching area of the center Friday morning. Final examinations and tests will be conducted on the rocket before the launch.
This is the first time the Long March-5 carrier rocket, currently China's largest launch vehicle, to be put into practical use after three experimental launches. The rocket is expected to send the Mars probe into the Earth-Mars transfer orbit, which is also the first such mission to be carried out by China's carrier rocket.
