NEW DEHLI: As India mulls to revenge Uri attack by illegally stopping Pakistan's share of water promised under Indus Water Treaty, China's role in this saga holds significance.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting today (Monday) to discuss pros and cons of this unlawful action on the 1960 water treaty signed between India and Pakistan.

According to experts, in case India decides to stop Pakistan’s share, China could respond to this act by blocking River Indus and River Brahmaputra as both of them originate from there.

China has not signed international water sharing agreement, so it has no obligation to let the rivers flow.

If China came in Pakistan's support, and diverted the flow of River Indus, India could lose 36 percent of river water. Additionally, China also has the option of stopping the flow of Brahmaputra river into India. The Brahmaputra feeds millions in India and Bangladesh. China is building 11 mega dams on it and is in a position to hurt India's interests.

Blocking flow of Indus would also cause floods in Occupied Kashmir and Punjab in India.

Violating an international treaty backed by the World Bank, would invite condemnation from across globe putting India under immense pressure amid Kashmir violence.

.
In addition to China factor Pakistan has to seriously consider war with India, if India stops Pakistani rivers.

Incase of India diverting rivers Pakistan should nuke India, as Pakistan has no other option.

Even though there isn't much Indian government can do about Indus treat, it shows their mentality towards Pakistan. Is this solution to terrorism. Actually, what he wants is 'Pakistan started the war rhetoric'.

this is just my own opinion and just that! lets say the madness prevails and they block all water flow into Pakistan what efforts can there be do damn rivers that flow into india by China and the likelihood of such a thing? Then divert the rivers as well say towards Pakistan, although geographically the terrain topped with the distance is not a easy factor at all thus such idea belongs to stupid box but in the present with the machinery and engineering capability available it may be plausible!

Just a bluff, don't take any of these 'threats' seriously. Wait for a couple of days for things to normalize. Water has led to many wars in the past, it would be an invitation really. But i don't think India would make such a rash decision. Plus lets look at the pro's and cons...

From surgical strikes to blocking water, what's next....? I hope it's something new.

India does not depend on Indus. If at all China Dams the Indus only Pakistan will be further affected. As for Brahmaputra, significant water of Brahmaputra is from mighty tributaries like Teesta, Subansiri, Lohit, Dibang etc. The immense flow of Brahmaputra is due to high rainfall in North Eastern India which is far from water scarce. So China is not so significant here. Siang is only a major tributary of the Brahmaputra from China.

Pakistan is the most unfortunate country in the world with its lifeline with its biggest enemy. Not only Indus basin waters but pakistan may lose Kabul river also if India helps with the exploitation of Kabul river.

Withdrawing from Indus treaty doesn't mean India will stop water. China and India doesn't have any treaty on water and we both are doing fine. Many countries across the world do't have any such treaties and they too are doing fine.

On the stopping water to Pakistan, Indians will be the first to oppose. Modi has made it clear that we have enmity with Pakistan's establishment and not with Pakistani people.

India knows it's consequences v well so they will

Just Randi Rona over media to get sympathies of people which taxs they are using to feed 700000 troops on Kashmir as well as corruption is enriched in politics armed forces so no one will go for war and stop the money to come in there banks
It's just money making techniques who get more score wil get more publicity and more chances to secure money

It is time for China to make good on those plans to shut the tap on India.

Why do Pakistanis hate Kashmiris so much?

Pakistanis should have big heart and have Kashmiris have some water to drink.

There are frequent protests in Kashmir as they do not have water to drink and all the water is being given to Pakistan.

. .
Are you aware of Indus water treaty ??
I think you are not aware of the Indus water treaty. Pakistan was given waters of Indus, Chenab and Jhelum because they flow through Kashmir. India kept the waters of Sutlej, Beas and Ravi as they are required by Indian Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. So you can say Kashmiris are deprived by the treaty. So they will only welcome the Indian exploitation of the western rivers.

It is not a question of "if" but "when" the treaty loses its relevance. India Pakistan relation is going south. Power and water requirements are ever rising. India is moving to a more nationalistic and aggressive mindset. So waging a water war is a much safer option with its benefits, low cost, maximum impact and has some justification.

.
Stopping the water will be considered as an act of war. Pakistan will attack on the dams with full force because not doing so will kill many in Pakistan eventually.

This is what BD should have done to Farakka and 53 other indian dams on international rivers entering BD but unfortunately we have indian slaves among us as leaders.
