China expected to release first 5G mobile phone in 2019

China’s first 5G mobile phone is expected to be released during the second half of 2019, said Wen Ku, director of the telecom development department at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. He made the remarks on April 22 at the 1st Digital China Summit in Fuzhou, southeastern China’s Fujian province.

Wen noted that China was home to 1.03 billion 4G net users in 2017, and a universal standard of 5G technology will be established in the future.

He said China is one of the leading countries of 5G development, and it has established cooperation structures with Europe, the US, Japan and South Korea on both government and industry levels.

The first 5G mobile phone is expected to be released when the technology initially commercializes in the second half of 2019, the director disclosed.

China Mobile, one of China’s major telecommunication corporations, exhibited its latest technologies at the summit, including 5G, e-gov, big data and internet of things.

Shang Bing, chairman of China Mobile, said at the summit that the company is speeding up the construction of the new information infrastructure and the commercialization of 5G technology. He added that China Mobile will provide world-class support for China in the digital era.

The 1st Digital China Summit, which kicked off in Fuzhou last Sunday, was attended by about 800 people including officials, representatives of industrial organizations and experts.

Huawei is said to prepare to exit US market entirely because of US espionage accusations. If that is the case, there is no point China allows Oracle and other US telecommunication companies to have presence in China.

If not enough, China should punish Apple on national security grounds.

You can't. In a standard setting organization, all companies are needed to pledge that they will license their technology freely at FRAND rates (Free, Reasonable, and Non Discriminatory).

Basically, a standard is like coming to common grounds. Any company that is granted a standard patent, gains a privilege on the exchange that that technology is free to be used by anyone in return for a token small amount of royalty.

Also, American companies like Qualcomm, Intel, also own a LOT of patents. In fact Qualcomm is still the single biggest player in 5G.

1. A lot of telecom and optical products are made ONLY in USA. Even Huawei has to procure there.
2. Some are made only in USA and one/two other countries like Japan. You will totally depend on that other country than.
3. Punishing Apple will punish Chinese suppliers a LOT, if a Apple pulls out of manufacturing in China. Other than that, Apple has actually helped in Chinese supply chain gaining maturity.
4. The fact is simply that this is not a reciprocal fight. US still has many advantages. China depends on US for ir-replacable and fundamental core tech, while the reverse is not true.
5. Apart from that, banning best in class US tech products will harm Chinese companies that export to the world.
6. A wise move would be to "hide your shine, bide your time" and slowly build core tech.

China will apply 5G technology to terminal devices as early as the second half of 2019, leading to the primary commercialization of the technology in the near future, according to an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

"China started 5G research experiments in 2016, and entered the third stage of system verification this year," Wen Ku, head of the MIIT information and communication department, said at the ongoing first Digital China Summit in Fuzhou, capital of east China's Fujian Province.

China has launched 5G cooperation mechanisms with Japan, the Republic of Korea, the European Union and the United States, with international companies joining the research and development, he said.

Wen said device manufacturers such as Huawei and Ericsson had participated in development of 5G products to help create a complete 5G industrial chain.

Given the significantly greater speed -- up to 10 gigabits per second -- that 5G offers, the next-generation ultra-fast networks will see ways of life change more than in the 4G era, in virtually everything from how we "interact" with our cars to how we use the products in our homes.

5G test network enters operation in Chongqing

The first 5G test network was launched in the southwestern metropolis of Chongqing on Monday, marking another step towards 5G commercialization in China.

Chongqing is among the first batch of cities to build and test run 5G networks in China.

According to China Mobile's Chongqing branch, the test network has entered operation in the municipality's Liangjiang New Area, and is expected to expand to the whole city step by step.

China Unicom to roll out 5G on mass scale by 2020

China United Network Communications Group Co Ltd, the country's second-largest telecom carrier, said on Thursday that it will finalize large-scale commercialization of 5G by 2020, as the country's major telecom carriers accelerated steps on commercialization of the fifth-generation mobile communication technology.

China Unicom will start 5G test this year, pre-commercialize 5G in 2019 and finally achieve large-scale commercialization of this cutting-edge technology in 2020, said Ma Hongbing, general manager of operation and maintenance department at China Unicom, in a cooperative partner conference opened on Thursday.

He said that 16 cities, including Beijing, Xiongan, Shenyang and Qingdao, will get large-scale testing of 5G this year.

China is striving to accelerate the research and development of 5G, as the super-fast technology is forecast to drive 6.3 trillion yuan ($979 billion) of economic output in the country by 2030.

Ma added in the conference that the company will also launch cloud computing tests in 15 provinces and cities in 2018.
