China Expands Airbase On Coco Island

coco%2Bchina.jpg

That arrestingly beautiful piece of land is Greater Coco Island in the Bay of Bengal, a part of India's Andaman & Nicobar Islands union territory. It is one of only a tiny constellation of islands that belongs to Myanmar. Greater Coco has for long been known to be managed by Chinese, with reports over two decades of signal intelligence facilities, maritime bases, a radar facilities (which is, apparently, all but confirmed) and as a general surveillance hub to keep tabs on Indian military activity (which only really began in a big way in 2001 with the setting up of the Andaman & Nicobar Command at Port Blair).

While I was on assignment on the Andaman Islands earlier this month, there was plenty of talk about how the Chinese were expanding Greater Coco island's airstrip into a modern air base. The Google Earth grab above gives you a splendid view of the runway that the Chinese appear to have built (my sources say the base is close to completion).

Indian threat perceptions aside, this airfield has got to afford one of the most scenic landings of any airport I can think of. What a beauty.

hopefully this new airbase gets completed soon. this would surely increase chinese power projection. fantastic development. thank you for the update.

India should seriously give thought about a missile base in Vietnam with co operation with fighter Vietnam to counter this move.

Point 1000 Brahmos towards the Coco.

That would be Possible if we have 1000 BrahMos :D

Anyway we Have a Sqdn of Sukhois based at Kalaikunda Airbase in WB And plan to deploy Detachment of Sukhois In Campbell bay in Andaman to Keep watch Over Bay of Bengal

What if china puts j-11s, j-20s in their Airbase .

It will take Decade for J-20 To be Operational , for J-11's we have Sukhois

Thats kind of a risk.In a battle scenario the Andaman and west bengal are at Risk form the Chinese Airbase .No chinese territory are at risk.

This Sukhois are Meant to deter Chinese Military Infrastructure in Bay of Bengal , Meant for Defence from Chinese Airbase

The Sukhois That will be based in Andaman would be capable to Keep watch Over Mallaca strait and Indian Ocean Region along with Bay of Bengal

The Sukhois from WB Will form Strong Air defence for Threats from Chinese Mainland

ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
muahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

its hilarious just reading these indians trying to act tough on china. lol.
oh oh oh, we must put brahmos, we must put su-30mki, we must put this and that.

india is no match for the People's Liberation Army.
NEVER HAVE BEEN AND NEVER WILL BE!
as much as india has progressed, china has progressed way faster and on a far larger scale than india could ever dream of and the lead over india is far greater than ever before.

if india ever makes the fatal mistake of taking on china militarily again, then the result will be india getting absolutely humiliated worse than 1962.

i guess hating on china is the only thing india has, because ur too weak to challenge us any other way!

u are not even a challenge to us anymore, ur pride and dignity has been torn to shreds, u challenged to a country that is far superior to u in every possible way.

we pummelled u into oblivion in 1962, live with the shock, keep it bottled up inside u silently!

As far as I know, no Chinese combat planes have been deployed outside of China, yet. However, it is a good idea to upgrade the airfield to accomodate patrol aircrafts. The majority of the oil imports to China will be going through Indian Ocean, thus having safe shipping lanes are vital to China's economy.

Aside from building military basis and forming carrier battle groups, Pakistan's navy should also be beefed up to help China secure this vital route.

this is great news!

china need to expand its military power projection.
"indian" ocean is international waters, china should protect all chinese shipping routes.

pakistan's military must be well equipped too so china and pakistan can secure both our futures together.

As far as I know, no Chinese military base deployed aboard too. looks like Burma is purchasing building service from Chinese company, to defend the little island, prevent it share a same fate of Sikkim.

Agree With you on Bolded Part , But does Same Applies for South China sea ?

Every nation Has right to Navigation in International waters According to Law , Chinese Claim on Whole South China sea Is Bizzare
