What's new

China Entertainment news, movies, TV, etc

The bad movie makers are able to break even or turn profit by releasing in China due to large population

That's for sure. Some movies that are panned by moviegoers in the US and the world do great in China (eg Resident Evil: final chapter)

Hollywood more and more dependent on China market is a bad sign for american. A sad trend. THis kind of movie entertainment dominance unlike technology or necessity, can be sanction off easily or hold ransom by Chinese due to the large amount of revenue critical to the US industries. Just like Disney land attraction. It is purposely flourish by CPC so that US senator and business related will think twice about really going too far with the Chinese in international scene or matter.

lol, it was actually the other way around. The Chinese market did not do well without the Hollywood movie.

Hollywood have on average earn approximately 10-25% from China (From Beauty and the Best 10% to Resident Evil 25%), while the rest of the world (Without China) and US is about 50/50. The problem for this is because there are not much acceptance of Hollywood movie either by censorship or quota system. Many Hollywood movie were not even screen in China. Take The Fate and the Furious, it draw 182 million in China out of 744 Million worldwide. The draw is roughly the same as US which mean Chinese box office is only 18% of the total box office, and this is the best performance in China.

On the other hand, Chinese first quarter box office is dismal, with Kung Fu Yoga and Journey to the West sequel both earning about 250 mil each, Railroad Tiger and Buddies in India each score about 100 millions, which is less than all the Hollywood title perform in China now.

FF8 - 180 Millions
Beauty and the Beast - 86 millions
Kong : Skull Island - 167 millions
xXx : The return of xander cage - 164 millions
A dog's purpose - 89 millions
Ghost in the shelf - 28 millions
logan - 105 millions
(total grossing 819 millions out of 3.6 billions total gross of these movie)

And there are not many big Chinese movie scheduled in the second half of 2017 (Maybe Journey to China? But I don't think it's count as a Chinese movie as the only Chinese lead is Jackie Chan....), while there are still a few Hollywood powerhouse left in 2017 (Alien, Mummy, PoC, Guidian of the Galaxy, King Authur and so on) It is estimated that Hollywood movie will outdo Chinese own movie at a 1:2 ratio in boxoffice. And at about 18% total gross in Chinese market.

That's not exactly the case because only a few Hollywood movies are allowed to be shown in China due to the quota system. Plus the rest of the world market is usually more than the Chinese market. It's rare for a US movie to top the $300M mark in China (eg Furious 7) but it is very very common in the rest of the world market.

Does "The rest of the world market" mean one nation of the world market except China or the entire rest of the world market?

. . . . .
only 1.5B ?
Don't you say it is more than that in China in every other nations ?

Rest of world did $1.1Billion. FF7 is the most successful US movie in China.

The current Furious movie (FF8) is the 2nd most successful. Transformers AOE is 3rd successful. No other movies crossed $300M.

I have felt in sleep when watching FF8 last Saturday. Hollywood movie is not the worst choice ,compared to China indigenous movie.

It's a chick flick. Girls go in groups or talk their boyfriends into taking them. Seems to be oddly popular with the Chinese ladies.

Just a few of those movies is enough to make China second largest movie market for US. I think I do not need to say more.

Entertainment and movie are those easily sanction off threat used by China as pioliticsl threat to US. There is nothing much to celebrate for American as they are more dependent on China market.

The Chinese market is less lucrative for foreign studios than other markets as they receive about 25% of the Chinese box office gross, compared to 51% from the North American box office and 40% from all other markets.

And as mentioned, there are restrictions imposed by the state on foreign films such as number of and timing of releases to protect domestic film makers (an interesting position to take given China's commitment to 'free trade', but that's another story).

That's like saying the Chinese film industry is dependent on the US since we are a $10B+ market. If that was the case you guys would be out of business overnight. There were almost 150 movies released by Hollywood last year and nowhere close to all of them were screened in China. Some of those that never made it to China had sales more than your #1 movie of all-time "The Mermaid" (eg Deadpool, Suicide Squad).
