China’s no-rules approach to armed drone exports has Beijing positioned to dominate the rapidly growing multibillion-dollar market, frustrating American companies while presenting real national security dangers for the Trump administration.

Behind the scenes, industry watchers say, the Trump administration is scrambling to fashion a coherent policy toward military unmanned aerial systems (UAS) sales that allows American firms to tap the huge international demand for drones while ensuring that state-of-the-art weapons don’t fall into the wrong hands.

By contrast, China has shown itself willing to sell to just about anyone, including customers in terrorist hotbeds such as Pakistan, threatening to render America’s policy scruples obsolete.

“It’s kind of the wild, wild West when it comes to selling things to other countries. [The Chinese] have no problems going in and selling to people we won’t sell to,” said Michael Blades, research director for aerospace and defense at the leading international law firm Frost and Sullivan.

Although China’s goal is simple — to make money and control a cutting-edge, high-technology, high-value market — the U.S. approach is murky at best. Decisions on which countries are allowed to buy American drones are made on a case-by-case basis, with no firm list on which nations can purchase them at any given time, and a lack of basic data on how many UAS are sold each year and to whom.

“If there was a certain policy that was in place and we could count on it, there might be some momentum … but there doesn’t seem to be any hard-and-fast rules for what the policies are going to be,” said Mr. Blades. “It’s very difficult to gauge what may or may not happen with regard to these kinds of sales when you’re not certain from day to day.”

One's worst enemy is another one's best friend. China has no problems with Israel and hopefully Israel won't try to pick fight with China, China may not be a good friend of Israel but can be its worst nightmare if turned into an enemy.

Is the author implying that the governments of Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and UAE are terrorist entities or potentially terrorist entities? The US had exported predator UAV to UAE as well and would be hypocritical to make such connections for these nations in which the US works so closely with for its own geopolitical ventures.

It just seems like to me that America is upset because China is taking its perceived market share while degrading its weapons export as a geopolitical tool.

As for Pakistan, it is a victim of terrorism and has regions with hotbeds of terrorism. The article got that right. This is all the more reason Pakistan should have better capabilities in dealing with these threats. UAV in the hands of the Pakistani military would do just that.

China has no intention of letting these assets getting in the hand of terror groups. With measures in place, it would be nearly impossible for terror groups to effectively use them.

America is not worried about the welfare of nations suffering from terrorism and it doesn't suffer the direct consequences. It is a smokescreen for its grand geopolitical venture in which terrorism is an aspect for reshaping the region and build up potential energy to be released at a future point.

UAVs in the hands of these nations don't erode the security of these nations or the region but the other way around. On the other hand it does erode America's status as the sole security guarantor. America would still have substantial influence in the region but the erosion could just be enough to remove certain tools (including policy tools).

Slanted article. While US gives India nuclear technology and supplies, they are complaining about Pakistan recieving drone technology from China.

More people killed in shootings/bombs in US than Pakistan now a days, does it make US a terrorism hotbed? More people raped/lynched/beaten to death by mobs in India, is India a terrorism hotbed?

For countries which don’t recognize TTP and PKK as terrorists, calling others terrorism hotbeds is ridiculous.

American ally as always appreciating and acknowledging Pakistani sacrifices in the American war on terror.

Agreed, but according to our liberals the US is the next best thing after sliced bread.

Trust me. The American author is only referring to Pakistan here.

America is upset that it cannot push Pakistan into a corner and bully it at will. That is the real American concern. The Americans were yearning to isolate Pakistan in every way possible. That wish won't come to fruition if China actively supports Pakistan in various kinds of ways.

Aren't the Americans opposed to all kinds of cooperation taking place between China and Pakistan? Why should we be even surprised at these hateful Americans.

American author has no problem with USA supplying weapons to FSA, or KSA, Qatar but has a special thing for Pakistan.
Does he know ISI was given money and weapons to supply to Afghan Mujahideen (now terrorists) against USSR?

.
Pakistani equipment hasn't fallen wholesale to terrorist groups. The US trained and armed Iraqi forces collapsed the moment ISIS attacked giving even Abrams tanks. Then there is also giving weapons straight into terrorist organizations in Syria
