China does not want to replace US as world power (Reuters)

7 December 2010 BEIJING - China does not want to “replace” the United States from its dominant role in the world, and the world should not fear China’s rise, the country’s top diplomat wrote in an essay.

State Councillor Dai Bingguo said that China would not engage in an arms race, as the country’s resources were better spent on development and ensuring its people had enough to eat.

“The notion that China wants to replace the United States and dominate the world is a myth,” Dai wrote in the essay carried on the Foreign Ministry’s website http: www.mfa.gov.cn late on Monday.

“Politically, we ... respect the social systems and development path of the different peoples of the world,” he added.

“Economically, we wholeheartedly want to continue to develop,” Dai wrote. “Militarily, we are not engaged in an arms race.”

China’s growing military clout and rising defence spending have raised concern in Asia, especially in Japan and Taiwan, as well as in Washington. China says its military expenditure is purely for defensive purposes.

Dai said the world had no reason to fear China.
“The international community should welcome and not fear China’s peaceful development, help it and not hinder it, support it and not hold it back,” he wrote.
But the world also needed to “understand and respect China’s reasonable interests and concerns”.

Such issues included China’s territorial integrity and foreign arms sales to Taiwan, the self-ruled island China claims as its own, Dai said.

China will also be “actively involved” in global issues relating to the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programmes, the Arab-Israeli conflict and Sudan’s Darfur, and “a responsible participant in the international system”, Dai said.

The United States, Japan and South Korea have pressed China to bring its old ally North Korea to heel following renewed tension on the Korean peninsula, though Beijing has refrained from doing so, calling instead for multilateral talks.

Of course. Remember what Deng Xiaoping said:

"Keep a cool head and maintain a low profile. Never take the lead... but aim to do something big."

Now some Indian is going to come into this thread and boast that they will be the number 1 power.

Oh, god. Then they are just armchair generals. India shouldnt aim to be some kind of superpower like USA. USA should remain the only soul main power.

The words do not match actions.

^not blaming him CS. It doesn't bother me anyway.
I deliberately stayed away from that thread since I knew how it was gonna go.
I'll give you my .02 on it though: Sometimes nations make wrong decisions to keep the allies happy. China is no exception so I don't see it as a big deal.

Then you are in the ultra minority. I really don't see how other Indians there can so judgmental about someone who is just being patriotic about their country. If he defended China's decision without knowing all the details first, why do those obscene and ill-mannered little people feel it's right to jump all over him.

The sad part is they've probably turned the only amicable and pro-everybody person on this forum against India. I personally think it makes a powerful statement about their behaviour.

another reason why I do not take forums seriously. it really has the ability to polarize opinions.

But as I see enough consistency, between what is said here, what is said in the media, what is said in most of the think tanks, what is said by some Indian academics, and what is said by the government, to conclude that these opinions are, if not in the majority, damned close to it.

I realized that the people here are a self-selecting group, but the number of thoughtful people here are still much much too low if they represent a significant portion of the population.

may be i should join one of these think tanks and begin changing china's image in india
