Visa denial: Worst insult from China to India, says BJP

Published Fri 27th Aug 2010 13:07

New Delhi, August 27: Congress and BJP joined hands in slamming China for its refusal to grant permission to Northern Commander Lt Gen B S Jaswal to visit that country because he comes from ‘sensitive’ Jammu and Kashmir area.

"We must strongly condemn the Chinese step. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Government must immediately convey our displeasure in the strongest terms to China. It is the worst kind of insult inflicted upon India by denying permission to Jaswal to visit China," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javdekar said.

He said China has always fomented trouble in Arunachal Pradesh and they have now begun fishing in troubled waters in Kashmir, adding, ‘This is helping Pakistan.’

Javdekar said it should be made clear to China unequivocally that Kashmir is not a disputed area and is an integral part of India.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said that India has always maintained that it is interested in strengthening and consolidating relations with China.

"However, the relationship has to be premised on self respect and the sensitivities which concern each other," he said.

Tewari said if there is any ‘unilateral violation’ of the same, “any reaction that happens in the country, it is natural and justified and it should happen.”

He expressed confidence that the MEA would do whatever is required to be done.

"That is for the MEA to work out what are the best modalities to raise it. I am sure the foreign office is cognisant of it and will do whatever is required to be done," he said, when asked whether the party would demand the government raise the issue with China seriously.

China has refused permission to Jaswal to visit that country because he comes from ‘sensitive’ Jammu and Kashmir area.

Reacting strongly to this, India has put on hold visits by Chinese military officials till the matter is resolved.

Visa-denial sparks India-China diplomatic row

New Delhi, Aug 27 : India and China once again engaged in a diplomatic row after China refused visa to a top Indian Amy official serving in Kashmir region, triggering a strong reaction from India.

China, media reports said, denied visa to Lt General B S Jaswal, General Officer Commanding in Chief, because he is posted in Jammu and Kashmir, which China calls a disputed territory.

His visa was denied when as part of a high-level exchange visit to China in August, Jaswal was nominated by the Indian defence ministry.

Reacting to the development, India's external affairs ministry said there must be sensitivity from both sides.

"The visit, referred to in a newspaper report today, has not taken place, due to certain reasons. While we value our exchanges with China, there must be sensitivity to each others' concerns. Our dialogue with China on these issues is ongoing," the external affairs ministry said.

The ministry said: "We have an important, multifaceted and complex relationship with the People's Republic of China. Our interaction has been growing in a number of areas, including defense.

"In recent years, we have had useful defense exchanges at various levels."

According to some media reports, there are indications that China might make amends since they had not expected such a strong Indian reaction.

India and China, two Asian behemoths and nuclear armed neighbours, have a tortuous diplomatic relationship with frequent controversies erupting over issue, including territorial disputes in Arunachal Pradesh and China's stance on India-based exiled Tibetan spiritual head The Dalai Lama.

India - China standoff over visa row

Lt Gen. Jaswal/file photoDharamsala, August 27 – In a latest diplomatic row between India and China, India has suspended all its defense exchanges with China in response to China’s denial of visa to a high ranking Indian army official, media reports said.

China refused to grant visa to Lt General B S Jaswal, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Area Command, who was nominated by the Indian government to travel to China as part of a high-level exchange visit this month.

Media reports said China denied visa for Jaswal as he is posted in Jammu and Kashmir, the northern Indian state which China calls a “disputed territory”. In a similar move, China last year agitated India by issuing stapled visas on passports issued in Jammu and Kashmir. It also told Indian MPs from Arunachal, which China claims as its territory, that they did not require visas to travel to China.

“The visit, referred to in a newspaper report today, has not taken place, due to certain reasons. While we value our exchanges with China, there must be sensitivity to each others' concerns. Our dialogue with China on these issues is ongoing,” the external affairs ministry said in a statement.

The two largest political parties came out in unison against the Chinese move. Bharatiya Janta Party Spokesperson Prakash Javdekar said, "We must strongly condemn the Chinese step. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Government must immediately convey our displeasure in the strongest terms to China. It is the worst kind of insult inflicted upon India by denying permission to Jaswal to visit China," He said China has always fomented trouble in Arunachal Pradesh and they have now begun fishing in troubled waters in Kashmir, adding, "This is helping Pakistan."

Javdekar said New Delhi should make it clear to China unequivocally that Kashmir is not a disputed area and is an integral part of India.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said that India has always maintained that it is interested in strengthening and consolidating relations with China.

"However, the relationship has to be premised on self respect and the sensitivities which concern each other," he said.

"That is for the MEA to work out what are the best modalities to raise it. I am sure the foreign office is cognisant of it and will do whatever is required to be done," he was quoted by media reports.

Two Chinese defence officials, scheduled to visit India for a course at the National Defence College have been denied permission by Delhi. Moreover, a subsequent visit by Indian military officials to China also has been cancelled.

[Most likely cause of Chinese visa denial]
Referring to the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's meeting with the Dalai Lama on August 11, China last week cautioned India to handle the Tibet issue "prudently" so as not to “disrupt” the ties between the two countries.

This Army Officer should be charged for war crimes if he did COMMIT ATROCITIES but since the West needs India to contain China then it is very UNLIKELY that he will ever have to face trial.

I like the subtle sattire towards India superpower vision by Chinese. The position is something like China standing on high state watching India on wheel chair trying to climb the stairs. And waiting for someone to create a ramp (execption) so it can be there without much effort.haha

Because security of India traditonally lies up its north. Imagine how all invasions of India came through ******?? We are saving your ***..be thankful!

How many such Indian outburst have we had in the media since this officer was denied a visa, there's all kinds of anger in India, not exactly expressions of "confidence" - it waws all handled rather poorly in my opinion, I mean, what was the point of such public anger? Or am I reading more into it than there is to it? Was the public anger calibrated? if so, why? if not, why not?

Why should public anger be calibrated ?
