BEIJING- Chinese authorities have closed Tibet to foreign visitors, travel agents said Wednesday, just 10 days after two Tibetans set themselves on fire in the troubled region.

The move comes at the start of a festival that traditionally sees tourists flock to the Himalayan region, which has been under tight security since riots against Chinese rule erupted in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa in March 2008.

Major travel agencies said they were told by Tibetan tourism authorities in late May that travellers from overseas would not be allowed into the vast, remote region and said they were clueless about how long the ban would last.

"The tourism bureau asked us to stop organizing foreign groups to Tibet in late May. We don't know when they will lift the ban," an employee at the Tibet China International Tour Service told AFP.

While the official reason for the ban was not immediately clear, one agent said it could be linked to the Saga Dawa festival, which celebrates the birth of Buddha in the Tibetan calendar.

"It was halted in late May. People said it was because of the... festival," an employee at the Tibet China Travel Service said.

The festival traditionally sees Buddhist pilgrims flock to Tibet to mark the month-long celebration, which began on June 4 this year - a date that coincided with the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown on democracy protests.

Another agent from the Tibet China Youth Tour Service said the ban might also be linked to the "recent social order problem".

China sporadically bans foreign travel to Tibet, where many Tibetans complain of cultural and religious repression at the hands of Chinese authorities - a claim the government denies.

Since March last year, 37 people have set themselves on fire in Tibetan-inhabited areas of China in protest at repressive government policies, according to activists.

On May 27, two Tibetan men set themselves alight in front of the Jokhang temple, a renowned centre for Buddhist pilgrimage in the centre of Lhasa - the first such incident to hit the regional capital.

Foreign tourists were banned from travelling to the region for more than a year in 2008 after anti-government riots erupted in Lhasa - unrest that subsequently spread to other Tibetan-inhabited areas of China.

Even in normal times, overseas tourists need special permits to travel to the remote region as well as their visas for China, and have to travel in tour groups.

Goodbye Tibetans. You may be at the brink of extinction but we will always remember you for being the brave, non-violent gentlemen that you are.

You could have taken arms against the rampaging chinese.
But you never did, always choosing the high way instead

We are inspired by you.
We solute you.
We will forever remember you

To hide brutality they have only this option

but they forgot an inevitable truth..in Information age, news of oppression on tibetan will pass through the "Chinese Firewall" anyway...

I know the south eastern region of Tibet with most beautiful scenery have been closen to foreigners all the time and Lhasa with ordinary view just the same as other chinese cities,so this news really makes no sense to tourists whether native or overseas.

Good policy China. You never know there might be NGOs and picture taking agents among the foreign visitors. These NGOs are here to dig for dirt and buy off trouble makers. Those agents are here to survey our terrains and troop movements. Both have to stop here in Tibet and keep watchful eyes on them elsewhere in China.

It has nothing to do with the "View", you have nothing to explain so no need to explain.
Tibet has spiritual significance that is beyond your understanding my dear friend. Tibetans sacrifices do not go in vain. The creation sees everything, and these monks who burn themselves give the grandest sacrifice of all. They sacrifice all they have for a cause.. and what a noble cause it is.

Human memory is too short, Civilizations rise and fall and languages change ..but the law of nature gives justice to all. Tibet may never become free again, but all those who are responsible for the suffering of Tibetans shall meet a fate crueler than them.. and the noble Tibetans shall be rewarded for their compassion.

This life is just a drop in the ocean compared to the countless lives we all live before we are free again. This life is a test and our task is to prove that we are worthy of the affection of this physical universe.. some of us fail miserably.

Tourists come to Tibet for what,do favor to Tibetans?Just stop to imagine Tibet a wonderful place.
I my view tourists just tourists,it's really a good decision to keep the foreign tourists out of Tibet and as a result let them keep imagine Tibet a wonderful place in their minds, otherwise they would be disappointed for what they have seeN.

China's Internal matter. Not your business.
internal matters can very well be discussed.
Tibetans are oppressed by the pla. closing their tourism industry will further decrease their income and make them more anti China.

solidarity towards the government of Tibet.

You guys talk as India has no problems at all. India has a shinning democracy with an uncorrupted paternity government. Citizens are happy, rich, 100% literacy, equality for all (no caste), Maoist only an imagination, no human rights problem, no hunger, not boastful, average 2 toilets per person and will be a supper power in a few years. And Indians are humble and not as belligerent and meddlesome as the Americans. You guys sure convinced me!
