China-centric Agni-IV missile to be tested today

India will conduct a crucial test of its China-centric Agni-IV ballistic missile on Tuesday, with a successful trial clearing the decks for its induction into the country’s strategic arsenal.

The 4,000 km range ballistic missile will significantly enhance India’s strategic deterrence against China. The missile has been test-fired four times in three years and barring the first trial, the remaining met mission objectives.

The fifth test will be conducted by the strategic forces command, which manages the country’s nuclear arsenal, from the Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast on Tuesday.

The missile will arm India with the capability of delivering a one-tonne nuclear warhead to a range of 4,000 km. It will be India’s longest range missile as the 5,000 km range Agni-V is still undergoing trials and is likely to be inducted only by 2016.

Agni’s existing variants can hit targets at ranges of 700 km to 3,500 km. The defence research and development organisation (DRDO) is expected to test-fire the Agni-V missile for the third time later this month.

This will be the missile’s first canister launch aimed at injecting more mobility and flexibility into the weapon system.

Figure often quoted for Agni III range is a BS figure. Agni III is much longer range than what is published by official sources. It can cover all the area of our concern and go much much beyond that. The weight of Agni III is reduced to 22 tons from 48 tons as design WIKI quotes the range as 4500 KM with 2.5 tons of load. It is actually design to equip with MIRV to work as a deterrent against China. With a load of 1 ton , It may go much beyond 4500 KM.

I think there is no possible to use such long range missiles, as specifically they are built to drop nukes only, The conventional war is the truth, and nuke war is the dream, so considering that we need more real battle ground weapons in Quality as well as Quantity.

Defence sources said Agni-IV was test fired from the Wheeler Island test facility for the scheduled test by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army today. This is the second test of the missile in one year. Earlier, the missile was successfully test fired from the same test range on January 20.

The trial is aimed at gauging the performance of its subsystems and checking the readiness of the armed forces to launch the missile on its own. The mission team, sources said, have worked minutely and meticulously to achieve success with high accuracy.

This indigenously developed state-of-the-art missile, the fourth in the Agni series of missiles, has completed all developmental trials successfully and is the most advanced long-range ballistic missile capable of being launched within minutes from a self-contained road mobile launcher.

Having a strike range of 4,000 km, the two-stage solid propelled missile’s length is around 20 metres and it weighs around 17 tonnes.

It can be launched from both rail and road mobile launchers, which gives it more flexibility and wide range of operational success.

Defence sources said Agni-IV is a modified version of the Agni-II strategic missile and was originally called Agni-II Prime whose test on December 10, 2010 had failed. The previous tests of Agni-IV were successful.

While Agni-II Prime had a strike range of 2,750 km having the capability of carrying 1000 kg payload, Agni-IV has a designed range of 4,000 km and can carry upto one tonne warhead with re-entry heat shield.
