China becomes world's No. 2 movie market
Posted: 09 January 2013 1925 hrs

BEIJING: Moviegoers in China spent 17 billion yuan ($2.7 billion) on tickets last year, turning the country into the second-largest film market in the world, the state news agency Xinhua said on Wednesday.

Sales rose 30 per cent from 2011, it said, citing the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), underscoring the rapid growth that has long attracted Hollywood despite China's tight restrictions on foreign films.

After years of pressure, China in 2012 agreed to increase the number of films allowed in annually from the United States -- which is the world's largest movie market -- from 20 to 34, whereas 893 domestic films were produced last year.

Nonetheless foreign films generated 51 per cent of the revenue, beating domestic film ticket sales for the first time in nine years, and Hollywood's share in China rose from 18 to 25 per cent.

But Tong Gang, head of the film bureau at SARFT, told Xinhua that domestic films' percentage of the box office "still exceeds market expectations".

The SARFT vice-minister Tian Jin last November urged domestic filmmakers to "enhance creativity", saying that domestic films faced great pressure and needed to be more competitive.

China imposes strict rules over what films are allowed to be seen by the public, banning what it considers any negative portrayal of contemporary politics or issues it says might lead to social unrest.

But Lost in Thailand, a low-budget Chinese comedy, overwhelmed expectations in December to earn 1.2 billion yuan ($190 million) within a month and become the country's biggest-ever box office hit, Xinhua said.

I saw one Chinese named 'Together'. a story about father and son. I cried while watching that movie. And yes, we will be happy if China will become second biggest market for India movies. May be it can build some bridges between us.

but to be honest I have never seen any Indian movies in my whole life, maybe Indian movies style doesnt suit Chinese market.

Take that experience. Its worth. Ask our pakistani friends. Our movies are full of life, music, dance and fighting. Just dont use your brain while watching them. :yahoo:

full of life, music, dance
maybe that's the crux,Chinese movie goers don't like a lot of songs and music in a movie,we prefer more of action and fun, that's why action stars Bruce Lee,Jackie Chen,Jet li...can be that famous all around the world.and the best ever box hit so far is a recent Chinese comedy movie.

that's the reason we don't like indian films, cut off the dances and add touching stories would be better.

Koreaan ,Japanese ,Singaporean and even Thai movies all have their considerable followers in China, their soap operas are especially appealing to young people in China,I think it's because of cultural similarities.

Not to say Indian movies are rubbish, but it's definitely a cultural thing. I have never watched any Indian movie and not gonna start doing it. None of my Chinese friends have ever watched an Indian movie as well. I wonder if Koreans, Japanese and Taiwanese even watch Bollywood creations.

movies are supposed for entertainment :what:.. you started dick measuring in movies too? huh.. well Bollywood will make films according to Indian market.. but not for japanese,chinis...etc.... so better if you pull back your tongue...

lol we have so many Internet warriors here...what an idiots..

I have watched the movie Slumdog Millionaire, the ending is very epic.

I have seen some chinese movies but i don't remember name of that actor ...tom lee don't remember exactly but his action films are amaziing

Just like we can't understand their culture, they can't understand ours. Why do you expect them to watch Bollywood? Be rational people.
