The Chinese embassy, on the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army or PLA, has said that defence relations between Dhaka and Beijing have reached “unprecedented heights”.
The embassy hosted a reception at Radisson Hotel to celebrate the anniversary on Monday. Over 500 guests, including high-ranking officers and officials, diplomats, and scholars attended the reception, the embassy said in a statement.
With common efforts, the two sides will forge “closer defence” relations in the future, the embassy said.
These include a growing number of high-level exchange visits, training programmes, joint exercises, defence procurement, security cooperation in such areas as counter-terrorism, anti-piracy, peacekeeping operations and disaster management.
Senior Colonel Zhang Wei, Military, Naval and Air Attaché at the Chinese embassy in Bangladesh, highlighted the “steady and rapid progress” in Sino-Bangladesh military cooperation in the last few years, pointing to the frequent high-level visits, continuously “deepening pragmatic cooperation and fruitful cooperation in personnel training”.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as well as the chiefs of Bangladesh’s three armed services have visited China.
And Air Chief Marshal Xu Qiliang, Deputy Chairman of Chinese Central Military Commission, and General Chang Wanquan, Minister of National Defence, visited Bangladesh with “great success and fruitful results”.
The Chinese PLA naval task group visited Chittagong for a second time in the past two years, which played a “positive role in promoting mutual trust and understanding, deepening the exchanges and cooperation, improving the ability to jointly respond to maritime threats and safeguard regional stability”.
“Meanwhile, an increasing number of Bangladesh officers went to China for training and exchange, which plays an important role in promoting mutualunderstanding and trust”.
Senior Colonel Zhang Wei also appreciated and praised Bangladesh’s position on issues related to China’s core interests. China believes that disputes should be resolved through “negotiation and consultation by the parties directly concerned, and not to be interfered by and third party”.
Over the past four decades, Bangladesh and China have maintained close military ties.
“China is not only a reliable and affordable source of weapons and equipment for Bangladesh’s armed forces, but also provides military training and technology,” the Senior Colonel said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have reached consensus on bilateral relations, and agreed to upgrade bilateral ties to a strategic partnership of cooperation, which injects “new impetus” into the growth of relations.
