ISLAMABAD: The Chinese government has approved 14 power projects that have the ability generate 10,400 megawatts (MW) of electricity immediately, while a few more projects, with a combined generation capacity of 6,445MW, would be completed in the second phase.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif congratulated the energy and economic teams on obtaining approval of the Chinese government for the projects. Among the ones approved include Port Qasim (coal) that would generate 1,320MW, Sukki Kanari (hydropower) 870 MW, Sahiwal (coal) 1,320 MW, Engro Thar (coal) 660 MW, Muzaffargarh (coal) 1,320 MW, Gwadar (coal) 300MW, Quaid-i-Azam Solar Park 1,000MW, United Energy (wind) 100MW, Dawood (wind) 50MW, Sachal (wind) 50MW, Sunnec (wind)50MW, Rahim Yar Khan (coal) 1,320 MW, SSRL Thar (coal) 1,320 MW and Karot (hydropower) 720 MW.

These projects will be started immediately and put into operation by 2017-2018. In addition, there are a few other projects, totalling 6,445 MW, which would be completed in the second phase.

“This gesture of the Chinese government manifests the deep cordial relations the country has with Pakistan and shows the confidence of the international community in government’s policies,” said the prime minister. He expressed his pleasure at the MoUs Pakistan had signed with China in the recent past and were now close to fruition.

He expressed confidence that this massive addition to power sector of the country would prove immensely beneficial in overcoming the electricity shortage. “This is part of the government’s energy road map which aims at ensuring provision of cost-effective electricity to the masses. These are the fruits of democracy which have started reaching the people.

Congratulations.
Way to go Pakistan and China.
These projects will have the effect of boosting the economy by facilitating industrialization and overcoming the shortages for the population, they will constitute a motivational tool to advance in many other sectors.

Guys, bijli won't come until 2017. 6-12 months prior to election you'll see near an end or very big relief in load shedding.

Curbing load shedding = next term easy win. If Nawaz does now, people will forget such improvment near time of votes. People care for what's given around votes time, not what someone did in their first or second year. Also it's very expensive if PMLn wants to curb load shedding soon. So it's a win win.

What about Kohala dam 1100MW? Now i only see 2 hydro projects instead 3.

Kohala is a bit far off with a tentative completion date in 2023. The list of projects in OP article are all fast-track. Sukki Kinari and Karot, both are Hydro and are supposed to be completed in 2020. We may reasonably assume that these two would have the longest completion period and therefore the above list of projects does not go beyond 2020.

hi
in your thread u mention rahim yar khan coal project, has it been sanctioned, the last i checked it was to go up in taranda saway khan in rahim yar khan . The chinese did a survey and okayed this place but afterwards the wadeeras etc were trying to change the venue

Besides large projects there is a need for small and medium sized hydro power projects to produce cheap electricity in KP and GB to cater for local need and to ease out load on national grid. KP government has already started work on small power units but an effort from Federal Government is also needed.

What is more power generation without a proper distribution grid and without proper billing and payment by the consumers leading to the persistently huge circular debt issues? How is China going to help with that basic problem that creates loadshedding?

Bhasha dam, Kalabagh dam, other dams (both small & Big), Solar energy in Thar, Cholistan & Balochistan province & Wind mills in Northern Areas will solve Pakistan's energy problems if they are worked on with complete honesty.

Increase forestation in Pakistan so that the environment is clean & there are more rains.
