BEIJING, Oct. 14, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- China's homegrown fourth generation (4G) mobile communication standard based on TD-LTE network is expected to be selected as the international 4G standard by International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

ITU held the working conference on 4G standard selection Wednesday in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

According to Zhao Houlin, deputy secretary-general of ITU, said the organization would start to examine six draft 4G technology standards in October, and announce the final international standard at the beginning of 2011.

U.K.-based Vodafone (NASDAQ:VOD) , U.S.-based Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and Japan-based DoCoMo and SoftBank Corp. (OOTC:SFTBY) all plan to adopt TD-LTE to establish 4G networks in future.

Vodafone and Verizon have joined hands with Chinese companies, namely China Mobile (CHL.NYSE; 00941.HK), tested the TD-LTE network for several times, and have started the construction of large-scale TD-LTE testing networks.

DoCoMo and SoftBank also conducted comprehensive demonstration and technology test.

Chinese telecom equipment manufacturers believe that once TD-LTE becomes an international standard, China's telecom enterprises are expected to get rid of the passive situation of being controlled by foreign telecom operators, and to see a beneficial environment for development.

Xu Jingtao, director of Datang Mobile Market Department, said if TD-LTE becomes the global 4G standard, China's telecom equipment manufacturers will not have to pay a great number of money for patents to foreign telecom firms, namely Qualcomm. (NASDAQ:QCOM) Meanwhile, Chinese firms are capable of launching technology exchange and cooperation with oversea enterprises with TD-LTE technology.

Moreover, Chinese telecom enterprises are likely to win considerable 4G international market share. Since Huawei Technologies and ZTE are world's leading telecom equipment manufacturers as well as foregoers of TD-LTE technology. Once TD-LTE becomes international 4G standard, Chinese firms are likely to obtain large amount of market share soon, and take the leading position in global telecom market.
