Don's blood pressure goes awry during a routine dialysis procedure; security agencies watching developments closely.
Underworld gangster Chhota Rajan is critically ill after his blood pressure shot up during a routine dialysis procedure at a Singapore hospital, sources in the Intelligence Bureau told this newspaper.
Rajan, who has been suffering from kidney ailments for several years now, was recently admitted to a top hospital in Singapore for dialysis and his condition deteriorated two days ago, the sources said.
Rajan, who has been living in South East Asia ever since he parted ways with Dawood Ibrahim in the 1990s, famously survived a bid on his life in Bangkok in September 2000. He sustained multiple bullet injuries and never regained full fitness.
"He was admitted to the hospital for dialysis last week," said a source on condition of anonymity. "He was shifted to the intensive care unit after his condition worsened, and he is critical now. His blood pressure shot up during dialysis and doctors could not stabilise him."
Mumbai police and other security agencies refused to comment, but sources said the establishment is keeping close tabs on the developments.
Rajan, who entered Mumbai's crime world as a bootlegger before rising to become Dawood Ibrahim's trusted aide, was seen as a crucial asset for Indian intelligence agencies following his falling out with Dawood.
It is learned that the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, which constantly monitors Rajan and his gang's activities, is in possession of a recording of a fortnight-old phone call where a person claiming to be Rajan is threatening a Mumbai builder. Sources who have enough reasons to believe it was Rajan himself who made the call said they have not noticed any activity from his side since.
They said Rajan's last known location was close to Cambodia, from where they believe he was shifted to an undisclosed location near Malaysia.
When Mumbai Mirror contacted JG Bhanushali, who is representing Rajan's wife Sujata in some criminal cases, he claimed he was not aware of any such developments. He said he speaks to Sujata only when they meet during court hearings.
Self-made Don
Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan began his life in crime as a bootlegger in a gang operated by his mentor Rajan Nair alias Bada Rajan. After the latter's death, Rajan joined hands with Dawood Ibrahim, earning the sobriquet as Chhota Rajan.
In tandem, the two lorded over the underworld for close to a decade before mounting police pressure in the late 1980s forced them to Dubai, from where they started remotely operating their gangs.
Rajan snapped ties with Dawood following the serial blasts of 1992, which the latter orchestrated as revenge for the communal riots that followed the demolition of the Babri Masjid a few months ago. It was also the time when others in the gang had started resenting Rajan's prominence.
Rajan declared war on the Dawood gang and relocated from Dubai to Thailand, from where he started operating his extortion business. Soon, he anointed himself as the `Hindu' don to take on the Muslim Dawood. It is also widely believed that the Indian intelligence agencies used him as a counterweight to Dawood. Back in Mumbai, Rajan and Dawood's gangs started sniping at each other.
As this battle of attrition raged back home Chota Shakeel, who was now Dawood's no. 2 man, tracked the secretive Rajan's location in 2000. A team of gunmen stormed Rajan's Bangkok home. Rajan, who took multiple bullets, made a dramatic escape by jumping off a first floor window. His aide Rohit Verma died in the attack.
Even as Indian authorities were convincing the Thai police to deport Rajan, he made another dramatic escape from the hospital after bribing the staff. While the escape was scripted by his trusted aides Balu Dokre, Bharat Nepali and Santosh Shetty, it is believed they had the blessing of the Indian intelligence agencies.
All out war
As he recuperated, Rajan's trusted lieutenants gunned down everyone who they thought had betrayed their master. To send out a message to Dawood, they also killed his trusted money manager, Sharad Shetty in an audacious attack on Dawood home turf in Dubai.
Again, it is believed that the Indian agencies - keen to see that the balance of power was restored - played a key role. Rajan soon became a crucial asset for the Indian intelligence agencies, helping them eliminate ISI assets in Nepal.
So important did Rajan become for the Intelligence Bureau, his aide Vicky Malhotra was in the company of a former IB chief when the Mumbai police arrested him in Delhi.
The incident led to much bad blood between the Mumbai police and the IB, who claimed that Malhotra was very close to giving them Dawood's location.
The last few years have seen Rajan constantly changing his location in South East Asia and even Australia to dodge rivals who were gunning for him. His wife Sujata and their three children had moved to India some years ago. His brother Deepak is a real estate developer and politician in Mumbai.
With age catching up with him, Rajan developed ailments like blood pressure and diabetes. Sources in the know said he had recently developed kidney ailments, which required frequent dialysis. He had also put on a lot of weight.
Though several of his aides are either dead or behind bars, it is said Rajan still takes good care of their families, ensuring they get a monthly payment. Over the last decade, like the rest of the underworld, he too is believed to have moved into real estate with huge interests in Mumbai and Pune.
He was last in the news for allegedly ordering the murder of crime journalist J Dey two years ago.
