Cheap Chinese copies shrink India's silk sari industry

i have been to varanasi and place where to weave this sarees and even bought 2 for my sister and mother. if you compare there quality with price its pretty reasonable. i think they just need a better distribution network.
i even talked to those weavers for long time and they told me that they even sell there sarees to big dealers in cities.

it must be dealers who must be fooling customers by selling chinese sarees under name of banarasi sarees.

Also, dezi, that would be the fault of the Indian retailer that sells the saris, we are only responsible for fulfilling the retailer's order. For us, a sari is the same as jeans or a wedding dress or whatever, the machines can do it all anyways.
Absolutely agree with you. I am not against the fact that Chinese goods are competing against the Indian products, but rather against the traders who are trying to capitalize on the cheap availability of Chinese silk and buying them in bales, thus circumventing the proper channel of selling these goods in India. If it were through the proper channel, then the govt can have control over how to regulate these such as to protect the local manufacturers.

I am sure you will agree with this to some extent as the Chinese companies are often protected and promoted by the govt.

I understand that some Indians may feel bitter about their local industry being outcompeted by the Chinese. As a member of WTO, India has accepted the principle of free-trade.

If the local silk manufacturers could co-operate and act as a unit, they may have more power to sell and buy silk, lowering costs. A proper marketing and branding can help the Indians to differentiate the product (even though the product is nearly the same as the Chinese).

That means that they have the potential to take a higher price for the same product. The Chinese silk can provide clothing to the masses, while the Indian provide to tourists and the rich people in India. In the long run, Indians themselves or foreigners can set up factories in India, making their silk as competetive as the Chinese.

These are just my initial thoughts, I do not know more about the silk market in India or China.
