ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has expressed reservations over the handover of a purpose-built border crossing facility in South Waziristan Agency to Afghan authorities.

The development came a day after the military said that the Angoor Adda border crossing facility was handed over to the Afghan authorities “to strengthen brotherly relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan and with a strategic intent to improve border management”.

“It was reiterated during the process, that all border-related issues will be amicably resolved through mutual consultations subsequently,” the military’s media wing said in a statement on Saturday.

However a source told

Daily Express that the interior minister has voiced his reservations over the move in a letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. All constitutional and legal procedures set for such decisions have been violated blatantly, reads the letter. “There are very clear rules which should be followed before taking such important decisions.”

Nisar said in the letter that the interior ministry was a big stakeholder in matters related to border management, border control or protection of borders. Notwithstanding, the ministry was ignored while handing over the Angoor Adda border crossing facility to Afghan authorities.

The minister said he had a lot of questions about how the facility was handed over to Afghan authorities. “The government is the custodian of each and every inch of the motherland. We must follow the legal procedures if we have to take such decisions,” he said in the letter.

Nisar added that he would wait anxiously for the prime minister’s return to take up the matter with him.

On May 13, Kabul and Islamabad agreed to reopen the Torkham border crossing which was closed after Afghan forces blocked a move by Pakistani authorities to fence the border, leaving thousands of people and vehicles stranded on both sides of the Durand Line.

Pakistan has repeatedly floated proposals for better border management in order to curb illegal movement, but the response from Kabul has always been lukewarm. Cross-border movement of militants is one of the key sticking points in Pak-Afghan relations. The two countries accuse each other of failing to maintain strict border controls.

The lack of coordination between the government and the military is becoming alarming. These two institutions are not supposed to be independent of one another, yet we're see daily signs that they're being controlled by different minds. I don't care how effective or efficient or competent the military is. It shouldn't be carrying out such things if the government appears to have no idea about what's going on and hasn't given its consent.
While Ch. Nisar has a point, it seems the military leadership of the two neighborly Muslim countries have better mutual understanding than between their political counterparts. In the particular background of Pak-Afghan relations' history, better understanding and harmony at military level might actually be more beneficial for both countries. But Ch. Nisar has a valid point that any interaction even at the military level needs to be guided by a well thought out policy at the national level. And I am pretty sure that is the case (at least between the PM House and GHQ). Let's have a good faith in our leadership.

have you read the tweets of bajwa he is showing it as some kind of great achievement. do he think of us Pakistani as phudu (stupid).

This is the result of the holy cow status given to the military. When some civilian questions the GHQ or ISI, the army boot-lickers come howling out like rabid dogs and start labelling everyone traitor etc.

A country where people are demanding a 22-grade government officer i.e., COAS to arrest the Prime Minister, who is going to question them.

The blame equally lies with our politicians as well because this is a fact that they have proven their incompetence time and time again and they themselves have looked at the military to come in and sort things out. People dont have an alternative other than to look at the military. But i agree we as nation needs to have some sort of balance in who we consider as a sacred cow and how much are we willing to look the other way and ignore things.

With no prior notice? Is the army going to handle our territorial disputes with other countries now?
Dear I think you are not following the news. This whole issue has been described by ISPR that not a single inch has been given to Afghanistan. infact the both sides of crossing are pakistani Area and only check post control is given to Afghan army. people living in the area will also remain Pakistani.

Even if it is/was Afghanistani land , i dont think it was GHQ's prerogative to give away the land . It should always have been the civilians , GOP should decide what to give and what not to .
But it seems now a days they are only concerned with Panama ( Gov & opposition )

Its better to have some one other than Raheel Sharif in command now. He is turning out to be a disappointment in the end.
Raheel Sharif did a million good things, and it took only one (we dont even know his strategic intentions yet) to multiply all his doings with zero.

because it was not his decision to make it was Parliament's decision.

sadly your parliament is busy in hiding their corruption, and they couldnt care less if you gave away the whole of Pakistan

And sadly you're comment proves nothing. The military never did and never will have any rights to do anything against the governments will. They didn't follow the procedure and will be held responsible. There was even one person who said "Pak fauj ko kohi nahi puch sakta" [Aisi ki taisey] Pak fauj needs to stay in its limits and why is everyone bashing G. Raheel shareef? He has done a ton of good things it's just this specific mistake .
The government should take measures to recapture it.

Agreed, Ch. Nisar concerns are right.

Basically Army thinks Pakistan as their personal property. They can grab any piece of land and hand it over to any country as a gift.
They never thought once about local people while accepting millions of Afghan refugees, foreign terrorists like Uzbeks, Afghans and Haqqanis.
This is painful.
