Chatgaiya language

Chittagong is in South East part of Bangladesh. How it will go to North Bengal? NE India can have some links with Chatgaia language.

North bengal is basically filled with refuges aftr partition and 71... most chittagaon people moved to tripura and assam... now later moved to north bengal as trade and comerce wer booming and govt gave lands here to refuges... we have considerable number of chittagaon people here... but most people of this generation dnt speak chatgaiya... i hear mostly from there grandfathers or other elders...

Technically,Bangla is a dialect of other language(s),but it was recognised as a language of its own.If Bangla can be recognised, why won't be others? Its disrespecting to get slapped in another language's arse where it doesn't belong.
If only living in Bangla makes you a Bengali, then all the tribes living in Bengal are Bengali.Do people call them Bengali? Hell no.Its the language that makes you Bengali.
You're somewhat correct in one sense, you can call yourself Bengali to refer that you've come from that area, just like any European person would refer that he's European. But that would create confusion in that case because people interpret Bengali as Bengali speaking person.
Using Bangladeshi as an identity solves all the problem.
I am not saying you're not Bengali,I am talking about people of Barak Valley and Chatgaiyas(again,I'm not sure about Chatgaiya)

I have nothing against Bangla, there's need of one single language which everyone can understand.I'm perfectly cool with its being the nationaI language.I have problem with people labeling my language as dialect and oshuddho form and who makes fun of it,there's nothing funny about it.

Among many of the dialects the standard dialect was chosen from Bengal region which the majority people understand easily and all the resources are available. Do you have problems to understand that? Hell no. These are all Bengali. All accepted it so your voice doesnt count here. Our left behind brothers of Barak valley still call themselves Bengali so why are creating confusion here. I say to you sidr not other Sylhetis. All tribes call themselves Bengali we will make sure of it. This is rebellion :azn: But those who had nothing with Bengal regions will never accept they are Bengali. And these dialect should come openly to show their differences, encouraged and nothing to shy of. If you cant show yourself creatively, no one will ask.

Its the language and culture that differentiate people, right? I believe race doesn't exist,we all came from the same source.
Gimme some words, sentences to translate,I'll try to show how similar are they to Hindi/Bangla.

BTW,Here's few words.

English - Bangla - Sylheti - Banglafied Sylheti

Morning - Shokal - Biyan - Shokal

Noon - Dupur - Madaan - Dufur

Afternoon - Bikal - Biyal - Bikal

Evening - Shondha - Hainja - Shoinda

Night - Raat - Rait - rait/raat

Sky - Aakash - Ashman - akash

Cloud - Megh - Haaz - Megh

Rain - Brishty - Meg - Brishty

Thunder - Bajra - Tha tha(Sorry can't write it properly in Englsih) - Baaj

Sweat - Gham - Fosina - Gam

Boy - Chele - Fua - Chele/Fua (Depends on the speaker)

Girl - Meye - Furi - Furi/Meye (Depends on the speaker)

Woman - Mohila - Beti - Beti/Mohila (Depends on the speaker)

Man - Purush - Beta - Beta/Purush (Depends on the speaker)

Fry - Bhaji - Biran - Bhaji/Biran (Depends on the speaker)

Now some sentence.
Come here - Obae aao - Edike Esho
Stand here - Ono ubao(Oobao) - Ekhane Darao
I can't - Ami fartam nae - Ami parbo na
It's raining heavily - Je meg der - Khub brishty porche
is it true? - Hasa ni? - Eta ki shotti
You are a stupid - Tui ekhta arua/biakhol - Tui ekta gadha

Now if you look at counting system, its almost same for Bangla/Hindi/Sylheti

I can write all days,so many of them,do let me know if you wish to know more.

These are understandable. There are other dialects apart from Sylheti eg Noakhailla and Chatagya which are also problematic to understand but they accepted they are Bengali. Even Sylhet has different dialects. ie Sunamganj dialect sounds different. So due to all these differences coming to a single umbrella is only viable. Even British has different accents all through their island.

My grandparents who were from Chittagong speak Chatgaiya amongst themselves. It's not too hard to understand for a Bengali speaker. I can usually get the gist of what they are saying without too much difficulty.

You must be kidding me! Maybe because you're used to your grandparents speaking around you all the time?

I remember back in the days two Chittagonian aunties were conversing in Chatgaiya - I asked them which language they were speaking, whether they were taking Chinese classes or something. :D

What were your age then? With age and experience all becomes easy.

. .
12/13.. have you ever heard anyone speak Chatgaiya?

Me too in the earlier age which seemed to me heard. But nobody talks to me now with Chatgaya. I never asked. I posted a video up. It seems to me easy to understand.

You missed the point.
Did I say I have problem with Bangla?read my previous post carefully.
My point is both are languages, its not originated from Bangla as some people think. So Bengali ain't the appropriate term.Bangladeshi fits the bill. Its not pleasing to watch misinformed fcktards correcting you,who thinks its the "Bikrito" form of bangla.
And,Sunamgonji is more closer to Bangla. The one you're thinking as Sunamganji its not.

For the people who's thinking what's the purpose of this thread,I am just checking whether Sylheti alone being slaughtered or there are other victims. It might look like some petty issue, its not(at least to us who care about our culture, language etc).

If you still gonna claim it originated from bangla, prove it with facts, data and examples.I find more similarities with Hindi than Bangla BTW.

.
The only thing I know to ask is,

1. "Gom asoni"
2. "Bathroom Koday?" and
3. "Oba - Doizza koddur?"

There is quite a sprinkling of Arakanese words in the Chittagonian language.

This is a bit off topic but what the heck - I'll bite just for once. Without starting a flame war, we can say that in the system of languages, the hierarchy of languages is distributed thus (according to Wiki which is derived from Banglapedia),

Indo-European

Now you might disagree - but this is what was agreed to by Sylheti language scholars as well as 'experts' in the linguistic field after they studied the language. We can all have our opinions but linguistics is its own field with fairly well established norms and rules. I don't want to delve into that subject right now. If in doubt - google it.

I don't know what can be proven by the inference that Sylheti was derived from Hindi rather than Bangla, but the linguistic proof we have belies this inference. In fact Sylheti has a fairly large number of Assamese borrowed words in it. One could almost call it a polyglot (mixture) of Assamese and Bangla.

Sylhetis in Bangladesh are already in the most privileged positions. I have members of my extended family who happen to be Sylheti and they are all upper class people. Other than the need of talking to other Sylhetis - they are happy speaking Bangla. Bangladesh is already such a small place, what's the point of driving more wedges into its linguistics structure?

BTW -I make it a point to learn regional languages every chance I get. They're great ice-breakers at parties and get togethers...:-)

Just because it has some words from Asomiya and Bangla doesn't make it one of its dialect.Even if I suppose its a dialect for the sake of argument,is it mutually intelligible? No.Not even mentioning Sylheti Nagri(script for writing Sylhety).
Bangla has countless Sanskrit words,it should be called Sanskrit then, not Bangla if you go by that logic.
Every language borrow words from other languages,English is full of Latin and Greek words, its still called English.
Its understandable why there is so much Bangla words in modernised Sylheti, because its forced upon everyone.(Textbooks,TV or whatever you mention)

Don't get me wrong,I am not dividing Sylhet or want it to be the national language or anything of that sort.

I(we) just want it be recognised as a language.I am not ashamed to protect my culture and language.

And leave those "experts" alone, they can pound themselves.

BTW,I am working on building an online Sylheti dictionary,I'll post once it's done and ready to collect data from the crowds.

That is good initiative. That Sylhety dictionary will merge and make rich Bangla language only. Really appreciate your hard work. This way every dialects should come forward.

Real syloti is polluted. Many words that my grand parents used to used not being used any more. Tagorized bangla has been introduced after 71 by non-syloti. Tagorized bangla destroyed our identity and culture.
