LAHORE The central spokesman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Shafqat Mehmood who is perceived by many of his party men as damage to the Imran Khans tsunami, is likely to be replaced with a suitable media manager after the intra-party polls of the PTI, TheNation has learnt.
Sources in the PTI privy to the developments regarding the growing unease among some senior party leaders against Shafqat Mehmoods shortcomings while handling informations nerve centre told this correspondent on Friday that stiff-neck attitude and incompetence of Shafqat damaging the party and they informally suggested to party chief to replace Shafqat with an appropriate candidate after the intra-party polls.
They quoted the senior party leaders as saying that Shafqat neither enjoys good relations with media nor his team members in the central information office, which was creating hindrances in the progress of Imran Khans tsunami.
The same senior party circles claimed that Shafqat had taken a position different to party policy, as he made utterances on some issues completely different from party chief and other senior leaders.
They added that party had to face embarrassment due to Shafqats failures on many occasions, while some of these episodes seriously damaged the party.
Sources quoted the same party leaders as saying further that they advised the party chief to pay no heed to the group of Shafqat and replace him to give the party a spokesman who could be able to counter the challenges of next general elections.
They maintained that partys media managers including Imran Ismael, Hamid Zaman and Andleeb Abbas were on the list of immediate replacement options of Shafqat Mehmood.
Meanwhile, PTI chief, Imran Khan who had announced an anti-drone demonstration in front of the United Nations (UN) building on October 26, Friday, has cancelled the activity apparently due to Eidul Azha.
However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief was in United States for a fundraising campaign of Shaukat Khanum and party.
Imran during a media talk early this month, had announced that he would lead a demonstration outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Oct 26 submitting a petition to its authorities that drone attacks were a violation of United Nations charter as well as international laws and human rights and they must be stopped.
When contacted some of the close aides of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief said that nobody in the upper echelons of the party knew about the exact details of cancellation of anti-drone demonstration in front of United Nations except the protest was postponed due to Eidul Azha only.
Hawkish leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were of the view that it would be highly symbolic if Imran Khan held an anti-done protest outside the United Nations on Eid day and they failed to understand why Imran missed such a politically vital opportunity to lead an international event.
