To Bolster the surveillance capability, the Chandigarh Police is set to acquire an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ‘Netra’ for Rs 35 lakh as necessary certificates from the Defence Research and Development Organisation has reached them.

Now, the proposal will be sent to Chandigarh Administration to take a final decision on it.

“The acquisition of the UAV has been delayed as the company that had developed ‘Netra’ had submitted certificates from its side, but the ‘propriety certificate’ and ‘reasonability certificate’ (a certificate indicating that the rates quoted are not more than that charged to other government bodies or PSUs) from the DRDO were awaited,” said Alok Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh.

Kumar said they will send the proposal regarding the purchase to the Chandigarh Administration as they had recently received all the essential certificates from DRDO. “We will now request the Administration to take up the project.”

The UAV will be helpful in maintaining law and order during VIP visits, rallies, demonstrations and in case of any disaster or calamity by providing a bird’s eye view for the law enforcement officers.

Earlier this year, the UP Police conducted trial flights of two UAVs—Netra and Golden Hawk—during Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s rally.

Both the UAVs were deployed at Sector 29-31 roundabout and were later brought to Sector 25 rally venue where they were utilised for surveillance of the area.
