The local and traditional industry in the tribal and some settle district regions of N.W.F.P like Dir, Bajaur, Malakand, Jamrud, Bara, Darra Adamkhel and Sialkot of Pakistan is rapidly on the road of its downfall. In the current conflict of United States and Talibans Pakistan was compelled to be drawn into and had to play the major role in it being in the forefront. In many aspects it became disadvantageous to Pakistan, first of all the locals especially those belonging to the affected and nearby regions produced a great hatred towards their central authority and army of own country as most of those killed and owners of the houses damaged were innocent people.
Besides all the miseries that the people of Pakistan faced the most affected industry of the province is that of the local gun manufacturing. It is not in the shape of a mill or big industry but people in different areas of the north western region make light guns and personal weapons by their own with minimum available utensils and equipments of their own. This skill is transferred from generation to generation for centuries as there had been sword and dagger making in the areas in the past and with time the skill changed making these people dagger to gunsmiths. These people do make the perfect match and copy of any modern light weapon soon as it is invented or manufactured by any country that comes under their observation. We have heard that when during the war against communism in Afghanistan the lighter Stinger missile against diving aircrafts were not enough in numbers to come over the need these people had asked President Ziaul Haq to support them so that they make its copies. These gunsmiths manufacture rifles and pistols in their rooms and stores beside their homes and shops. Now with the search operations carried on in tribal region and villages all of the firearms are collected to the government dumps to be rotten there in the name of fight against anti state elements, thus the industry of local gunsmith is on its rapid way of downfall rather is being brought to its death. To be noted that the guerrillas fighting against Americans across the border and Pakistani forces do never live in tribal villages that are falling victim to security forces and they do not use the weapons that are manufactured by these people rather they mostly use equipments that are manufactured in United States itself except that of Klashnikovs and RPGs that Russia for its spreading of communism and China to fight against Russian communism with American support have manufactured in such a number that it is available all over the world.
Many gunsmiths of the province have already shunt the profession of their forefathers and have engaged themselves into unhealthy activities and occupations like drug trafficking etc. When these people are asked about, they say that the government restriction on weapons and its strict policy towards having arms licenses has day by day become so hard that one can not carry on with the profession and the area is not profitable to any other profession so they are automatically reverted to the trade of drugs. They also accuse the security forces of carrying away their whole armoury even that be of any minute nature. There are shops and steel equipments, furnaces and small local industries of these gunsmiths all closed for months with their initial mechanism and instruments got rusty and out of use. Pakistan is killing its golden goose and bringing up jackals out of its lions.
