We should protest for our rights. According to the treaty, the electricity generated is yours and water is ours. Why renege. After lots of experts from IIT, L&T gave thumps up to the dam, Kerala govt wants to lower the height. Why?

Unlike Cauvery, Mullaiperiyar treaty is crystal clear. The dam and its water belongs to TN. We pay taxes for its usage and money for electricity provided.
Kerala wants to build a new dam by destroying the old dam and with a new treaty. Why? To safeguard the interest of those who have built resorts around the reservoir whose will be submerged if the water is filled upto 156 feet?

Unlike this case, Mullaiperiyar was a blatant disregard of agreement signed and Kerala got rapped by SC.

What a wonderful deal that they signed after independence.

But you dont have to look for an experts view .Anyone that visits that dam can understand that .

The first fault lies within us, the Kannadigas. We have completely failed to find a competent leader in the last decades. We need someone who is not scared about his seat but looks at the welfare of his people. TN also needs a leader who is ready to engage Karnataka in a meaningful way. Water is everybody's resource and the two states need to come together to understand the needs of the two states and how the water is being used.

TN also needs to get over the silly 1Rs idle-sambhar, vote politics and invest that money in conserving water. Both KA and TN need to employ drip irrigation for the water intensive sugarcane crop and stop or reduce the paddy crop. Let water rich areas, maybe north of India to cultivate rice. Taking care of natural resources is everybody's responsibility.

Kannadigas have to revolt since we have a spineless government looting us! Unfortunate that property was damaged but no Tamilians were harmed. In one case, an auto was called, an old tamil lady was made to sit, before they damaged the taxi she was travelling in...don't get me wrong, it was crazy to destroy the taxi in the first place but there was still humainity somewhere in all the madness. One has to understand why Kannadigas had to take matter in their own hands.

Lastly, this has nothing to do with keralites, so please stop piggybacking on our issue to express Kerala's frustration on TN!

This will not end, everytime we have weak monsoons, this issue will crop up again! Will our Kannadiga politicans grow some balls?

I think it is hight time India starts taking her internal conflicts seriously instead of spreading terrorism in the neighborhood.

Current Indian policies are going to backfire massively and might see an unprecedented upsurge in internal conflicts if her neighbors started to retaliate.

So for the sake of whole region, I just hope some sane people in India stop this madness!

Unfortunately, River interlinking won't directly benefit Karnataka for the same reason that all major rivers tend to flow away from Karnataka towards either Telangana or TN or Goa - i.e. for being at relatively higher altitude for the linked rivers to benefit the region.

My region in Northern Karnataka sees annual agitations for the same reasons for Krishna, Tunga-Bhadra, Mahadayi rivers that flow endlessly towards Telangana and Goa while almost the entire population in Northern Karnataka goes without a drop of water even to lick. Everybody talks about water problems in Latur that gets supplied with water ferried in water-trains, but nobody even blinks for the people of northern Karnataka which is literally less than a 100 km from Latur and faces similar if not worse drought-like conditions.

Forget the farmers, the first priority should be to provide drinking water across both TN and Karnataka. This notion that more farmlands in TN depend on Cauvery than in Karnataka and therefore should have first rights on Cauvery waters, doesn't really seem reasonable as long as farmers in both the states don't change their cultivating habits.

I seriously think water-rationing is the only way forward. If your farmers (or my farmers that are downstream from any dam) choose to grow water-thirsty and really really wasteful crops like sugarcane/paddy, no amount of water on the planet will ever be sufficient.

After everything is said and done, the worst affected is the Bangalore City which doesn't get water to drink even as Cauvery flows in all her fury and glory - less than 100 kms from the city center.

Thing is no one grows water absorbing crops down south in Tanjore. It is called rice basket of the south for some reason. If Tanjavur rice crops fails, then we need to import rice.

Probably will try & see if it can be changed but the Supreme court will have the final word.

Will have no validity, more a method of assuaging public anger as well as to try & protect themselves from any contempt proceedings.

Well, they can't. By law, Karnataka is NOT allowed to build any dams on any of the major rivers flowing towards Telangana/Goa - just like Cauvery in the south! Only recently Karnataka got bitch-slapped by tiny Goa in the Supreme Court when it requested to divert a tiny bit of water away from Mahadayi that flows towards Goa to provide drinking water to a desperately thirsty district in the northern Karnataka.

Besides, none of the interlinked rivers are envisaged to pass through Karnataka owing to its relatively higher altitude compared to the rivers that are supposed to be interlinked. The best scenario that people in Karnataka (especially northern part) can pray for is that people in Telangana let them keep a portion of their own water that flows from Karnataka "atleast for the sake of humanity" while Telangana gets to use the interlinked river waters instead.

But in all sincerity, I don't see any reason for the people in Telangana/Goa will show any mercy for the people in northern Karnataka.

Karnataka is already the second most arid region in the whole India - immediately after the barren deserts of Rajasthan! That should tell you how desperate the situation in Karnataka really is, despite giving birth to so many rivers.

Well they don't have to. The "regime" in balmy Bangalore has left the people in the northern Karnataka for dead long long ago. And the sheeple in the north deserve nothing better!
