Canadian Muslims are inviting people of all religions to join them in breaking their daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Through the "Fast with a Muslim Friend" program, non-Muslim Canadians are invited to sign upto try fasting and then share iftar, the evening meal that ends the day of going without food or drink.

The program is designed to help "break down barriers" in Canada and encourage understanding, a spokesperson from Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Canada said Thursday.

"All Muslims are really, really excited about hosting a fellow Canadian," Safwan Choudhry said on CTV’s News Channel.

From June 18 until July 17, Muslims celebrate Ramadan, a month of fasting, reflection, and charity. During this time, the faithful do not eat or drink during while the sun is up.

Choudhry said the experience teaches self-discipline and empathy for those who go hungry every day.

"It forces you to be inspired to think about over a billion people around the world who actually live like this every day," he said. "I can actually end my fast when the sun sets and eat. They don’t have that."

He encouraged non-Muslims to share the experience, either for a day or a few hours, and then break their fast with new friends.

Participants are invited to share their experiences online, by blogging on the program’s website or posting on social media with the hashtag [HASHTAG]#FastWithMuslims[/HASHTAG].

"It’s about spirituality, it’s a time for reflection, to be charitable. And by fasting, you’re also having that empathy for people who are less fortunate," Nutritionist Zannat Reza told CTV's Canada AM on Thursday.

Reza recommends that anyone who is fasting should pay close attention to their pre-dawn meal as a chance to load up on protein and fibre, and ensure that they’re well hydrated. Eggs are a good source of protein, she said, also recommending high-fibre cereal, as well as fruits and vegetables such as grapes, berries, or avocado, as good choices before a day of fasting.

She also recommended keeping the evening meal light, to avoid shocking the body after a day without food.

Traditionally, Reza said, many Muslims break their fast with a glass of water and a few dates.

"The sweetness from the dates just kind of jolts your body back in terms of energy," she said.

Lentils, chickpeas, or brown rice are also good options for protein in the evening, she said.

Well its a very good gesture. I appreciate it. Others should also do the same thing i.e. invite Muslims to share their tradition too. That will be great in enhancing Interfaith harmony.

Ibn `Umar related that the Holy Prophet said: "If a Muslim calls another kafir, then if he is a kafir let it be so; otherwise, he [the caller] is himself a kafir".
Abu Dawud, Book of Sunna

"Abu Zarr reported that the Holy Prophet said: "No man accuses another man of being a sinner, or of being a kafir, but it reflects back on him if the other is not as he called him".
Narrated by al-Bukhari

"Withhold [your tongues] from those who say "There is no god but Allah" --- do not call them kafir. Whoever calls a reciter of "There is no god but Allah" as a kafir, is nearer to being a kafir himself".'
Tabarani, reported from Ibn Umar

It works in the west. I personally deceive these british folks in to thinking Im a muslim. My beard really helps too, and there's nothing you can do about it here because double standard hypocritical folks like you are not in charge here.

These guys are not Muslims ? Then the title needs to be changed. I thought these guys are Muslims. But any way, a good gesture. I have never been to an If-tar Party.

Gen Zia wanted to destroy Ahmadiyyat, he wanted to make Ahmadis beg for money, today Pakistan begs to USA, China, Japan and EU for aid. Where as Ahmadis continue to grow and fund themselves. Thanks God for Zia ul Haq. Because of him a large well educated and well skilled Ahmadis left Pakistan for Western countries.

PS: Don't expect Ahmadis in the West to stay silent on their fellow Ahmadis being persecuted in Muslim countries. We will enjoy the freedom of Western Governments, they let everyone worship freely with out harassing anyone, they let us live in peace, we don't have to fear some lunatic attacking our mosques or governments demolishing or closing down Ahmadi mosques.

Does this give Pakistan a bad name in international press? So let it be, maybe you shouldn't have discriminated against Ahmadis and other minorities.

They should told them Ramazan is not just about remain Hungry and thirsty , but its about to feel the pain poor people go through , and also keep your self away from all sort of sins.. . May Allah bless Muslims ..

@Horus please take care of members here .. before this thread turns into a religious fight thread ..
