Every time the Liberals come into power they spend like crazy on building infrastructure which in the larger scheme of things benefits everyone.

Conservatives would have just sat there and handed out monthly welfare checks to the oil patch workers of Western Canada, starting from the CEOs of course and let it trickle down. The Liberals bought the damn pipeline and are going to build it. Although the Conservatives will later on try to take credit for it, they always do.

Had the Liberals been in power in Alberta during the oil boom, they would have turned Alberta into a world class economy all on its own. The conservative brand struck luck when they struck oil. The PCs cannot run a state. They can only get elected by riling up deep rooted mistrusts people have of others.

The problem is that even in a country like Canada you can have Doug Ford, who is nothing but a Showbaz Sharif except less corrupt, be able to get elected by signalling certain vibes that appeal to the most basic fears people have of others.

Harper tried to stir the pot because the ingredients he was hoping to light up were already present but the Canadian deep state as well as the collective national psyche rejected it. You just cannot allow one single person to create and expand rifts in your society just because he can get elected this way because it can be disastrous both in the short and long term. This is exactly why Pakistan must do whatever they can to ensure Modi gets reelected.
