"The HELP mentions saying that the oil & gas explorations companies of Pakistan have not been active in the area close to the Indo-Pak border, Tatot Block of Rajasthan which is only at 10 kilometers from the border will soon become a major oil field for India. As Pakistan’s companies are not exploring and producing oil & gas in districts Sanghar, Sukkur, Ghotki, Kasur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan, the question arises as to whether ‘Pakistan’s oil and gas migrating to the Indian-side?’ Indeed this should be of primary concern to the prime minister, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Finance & Ministry of Petroleum."

@niaz Sb, would be grateful if you can share your comments on this Sir? Is it just media hype or is it a real threat that oil resources, if not extracted, can be sucked up from across the border? We heard same stories about Balochistan earlier.

thanks.

Mari, Kadanwari (ENI and OMV both, yes I know OMV moved out), UEP fields in Badin.

I dont know if it can migrate but there can be a reservoir on border. If the deep reservoir is part in Pakistan and part in india and india drills it from its side, they can empty the whole reservoir. I guess countries do share reservoirs like qatar and iran does.
If there is a well just 10 km from our borders, it most probably has parts of reservoir in Pakistan too. I dont know if there is any rule on how far from border u can dig. The govt should look into it. I doubt india will ever get into a sharing mechanism but we can drill it too and take our share.

India is sucking oil since ages from Kach region.

Sir,

Per the best of my info, Indian gov't owned Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) discovered a couple of gas formations in the Gulf of Kutch in 2017/2018. These reservoirs are found in the Indian owned waters and not in Pakistani waters.

Hydrocarbons will not be "Sucked" but flow in the normal manner. However, if you have 'Special' information about Indian sucking the oil/gas from these wells and /or if these well lies in Pakistani waters, kindly advise the sources of such information.

For the record, the Indian west coast has been an oil-producing for more than 40 years. The giant Bombay High Offshore oil field was discovered in 1974. Its peak production was about 400K bbl per day and as of late it is still producing about 200 K bbl per day.

There is a possibility of Hydrocarbon deposits in the nearby Pakistani waters too. That is why Kekra-1 was drilled.

One would have thought that after so many false starts people have wised up and stopped believing rumors. However, after the recent noise about OGDC finding 95 -trillion cft shale gas which was later denied by OGDC, it appears that one can fool my countrymen again & again.

My source of information is purely personal. In 2007, I was talking to my cousin, who then was working with Schlumberger. He told me that from India side in Kach region, some other international company is drilling and extracting oil. Pakistani authorities were then simply not interested in developing that region, as that was considered remote part of Pakistan. Allah knows better.

Migration of Hydrocarbons:

The geological migration of hydrocarbons is a FACT. The main reasons reason being that oil/gas is trapped at the highest point in the permeable rock which causes lateral & upward movement especially during a geological event such as earthquakes. The second reason could be that since oil/gas as well as water occur in different layers in porous reservoirs, also if for some reason there is a fracture in the oil-bearing formation, hydrocarbons will carry on migrating along a ‘carrier bed’ until less porous rock ‘Trap' blocks the flow. Such movement can also cause ‘Seepage’ along the way.

However such migration is not man-made but has natural geological causes. In Pakistan, in particular, one finds lots of small fields scattered over a large area. It is probable that over the millions of years, larger foil breaking formations fractured due to tectonic movement causing the hydrocarbons to escape which later accumulated into smaller reserves. It may all be conjecture, nevertheless, migration of hydrocarbons with the rock formations and or from one trap to another, is an undeniable reality.

Sir,

I am familiar with the Schlumberger. They are a large Oil Field Services & Equipment company and directly not involved in exploration. But drilling oil in the in the Indian Koch territory does not imply sucking oil.

By the way, the old state of ‘Kutch’ lies in the Indian state of Gujarat. Edge of the Rann of Kutch which was part of the Kutch state forming the western boundary with Sind. Pakistan claims that the Sind boundary runs along the middle of Great Rann (map in the earlier post) and fought a war in 1965 over it. Current Pakistan boundary is 'Sir Creek' just to the West of the Great Rann.

Indians can do whatever they want on their land. My issue with your post was that the wording 'India is Sucking oil', gave me the impression that oil reservoir was in Pakistan and India was stealing it by ‘Sucking’.

Oil does migrate across the border if it has valid visa.
