During the cold war era, India had a strategic relation with Russians and economic relations with the US and other NATO countries.
India balanced her relations with Israel, USA and Iran.
India has balanced relations with KSA and Iran.
India had balanced relations with both Russia and US during Crimean crisis.

Russia is just testing the waters of a new possible axis of China, Turkey and Pakistan because of her issues with USA and India's growing proximity with the USA. But not to forget that Turkey is still a NATO ally, Pakistan will jump into American lap at first signal given to them by Americans and not to forget that if Russia refuses to be the second fiddle of the USA, she will refuse to do the same with China. International relations are not as simple as some make it sound like that.

What you don't understand is that India can't have "strategic relationships' with the two who are enemies of each other. Friend of my enemy is my enemy, if you recall that. In the past, as you said the strategic was with Russia and commercial with US. This time Indian simply will not get strategic with both, Russia will continue to distant itself and will form strategic with Pakistan and commercial with India.

Pakistan will not jump into the American lap (politicians will, as they have assets in West) especially after the three 2011 actions by US forces. Pakistani Establishment are the real policy makers and the public sentiment has shifted away from US.

Baring Indians everyone in this free world is seeing a shift in relations between USA and India and Russia and Pakistan. The Russians have fed India militarily for the last 70 years and in return Modi is there licking the backside of every American CEO this will never sit well with Russia.

The only counter argument Indians have is well Russia can't afford to loose India as its spends alot on military equipment. My argument is Russia sees Iran and Pakistan collectively buying alot of military equipment from them and India favouring USA products over Russian.

This has always been the issue not only with Pakistani common citizen but their policy makers as well, they just don't understand the ABC of diplomacy "Nobody is Permanent Friend and Enemy".

The only positive things that has happened between Russia & Pakistan are :
1). HUGE!!! military exercise, which they think has made "Paradigm" shift in geo-political scenario in the "World".

2). Two articles written in India funded by some USA lobbies, about Russia-India relations. But this article forget to put the recent invest done by both the country in each others territories, starting from Indian companies investing $ 6+ billion in energy sector and Russian companies responding with one of the biggest deal in India's history with $ 13 billion buy out of Essar oil.

So an illiterate people with no knowledge about foreign policy and diplomacy can have their short time orga$m.

USA & India relations is strictly driven by either economic or slight defense perspective, there is no one who can replace Russia at the moment.

And don't come up with this BS that Iran & Pakistan will feed Russian industry, go ask your experts here, about what is your annual budget and your history of betraying your own allies.

And the article has totally turned a blind eye to level of trade and defence ties between Russia and India. And guys there think that Russia will abandon India for Pakistan just over nightly? Utterly BS article which only shows the typical mentality of crying wolf on everything out there. Didnt know that Bollywood has infested in minds of even journos out there so much. On the contrary if there are any strained relations between India and Russia then for that its India who is mainly responsible who has tilted away to US so fast so close.
