BREAKING: BYD said to supply 'blade battery' to Tesla next year - CnEVPost

BYD will supply its "blade battery" to Tesla in the second quarter of next year, local Chinese media cls.cn said Thursday, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The Tesla model with the "blade battery" is now in the C sample testing phase, the brief report said.
BYD said it had "no comment", according to the report.

The "blade battery", unveiled in March last year, is a power battery that BYD claims will not catch fire, and was first used in the flagship Han EV model.

The battery has not previously been available to other companies due to capacity constraints. But recent indications are that its capacity has increased significantly, and the company is still building a lot of new battery capacity.

Late last month, Jiemian.com reported that BYD's entire pure electric car lineup is now equipped with blade battery.
BYD also said it is now aggressively expanding capacity to handle future sales increases and supply to external customers, the report said.

In April, the second phase of BYD's power battery production base project was launched, with six new blade battery production lines to be built, according to Chongqing Daily.

The first and second phases will have an annual production capacity of 35GWh at full capacity and an annual output value of 30 billion yuan ($4.6 billion), the report said.

On July 15, BYD and the government of Changchun, Jilin Province in northeast China, and FAW Group signed an investment cooperation agreement to establish a power battery production base in Changchun.

On Aug. 3, BYD set up a new battery company in China's eastern Anhui province, according to data provider Qichacha.
The company is called Wuwei Fudi Battery Co. Its business scope covers battery manufacturing and sales, research and development of new material technologies, and manufacturing, sales and research and development of electronic special materials.

BYD's new energy vehicle sales in July were 50,492 units, up 234 percent from a year ago and 22 percent from June.

So far this year, BYD has sold 205,071 new energy vehicles, an increase of 170.62 percent over the same period last year, it said in an announcement.

BYD sold 50,057 units of new energy passenger vehicles and 435 units of commercial vehicles in July.
It sold 24,996 battery electric vehicles and 25,061 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in July.

Li Yunfei, general manager of BYD's passenger vehicle brand and public relations division, said in early June that the company's new energy vehicle sales will surpass Tesla China in June and is expected to become the global new energy vehicle champion within the year.

BYD sold 41,366 new energy vehicles in June, up 192 percent from the same month last year and 26 percent from May.

By comparison, according to the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla China's wholesale sales in June were 33,155 units, up about 122 percent year-over-year.

Blade battery is the game changer.
Not that much. Just one incremental improvement.

I'd say it's more remarkable how slow the Tesla was to put new developments into production.

Their Model S saw no improvements in almost 10 years.

They started off a very high mark though, and are still recouping initial commitments.

Those who started with smaller bets were able to change plans, and adapt more freely, while Tesla is stuck with owning their supply chain.

Its indeed a game changer. It uses less rare precious mineral . also means cheaper in terms of price. Its chemistry is also less volatile compare to Lithium Ion which catches fire easily if short or pierce thru.

LFP has less density but was make up by BYD clever density arrangement to maximize its content power. LFP also supposed to charge faster than Lithium Ion. Blade battery equipped EV will accelerate EV adoption by many countries as safety, density and higher charging speed solve many problem plague previous EV.

Can other companies in the near future make blade battery or BYD patented it?

Can other companies in the near future make blade battery or BYD patented it?

If they have the ability they can make it. USA doesn't care about patents either my friend. They just seem to care more because they own more but when they don't they will not care either. This has been so with every country in the past. Just like when you are rich you hate tax and welfare but when you are poor you will want rich people to be taxed so you get better education, healthcare, and welfare.

When they can make something they will not care so much about patents. Sometimes it is just cheaper to buy from the supplier. China observes patents when the gain is not important either just like USA but when the gain is important, no patent will be in the way. But we should remember that important technology is almost never patented. Only things some business or boss want to sell and make sure no one else in his country and hopefully other countries will copy.

If some European or American company manage to produce similar blade technology battery, they will not care about any patents. China won't care too much either. When Apple accuse Huawei some using similar display design or something stupid like that, Huawei then sue back with things they think Apple copied like multiple lens technology and software. It's all stupid games and just shouting at each other. In the end of the day, it is about ability. Can you even make it? Try and copy. I can show India how blade battery technology works and they will not be able to produce one single working example because they do not have the complete background sciences and they do not have the 20 industries required for just this one battery.

Americans, Japanese, German, Koreans, and maybe France too have very strong overall science basis and strong highly developed industries in technology and manufacturing of many things from small and cheap to large and expensive. So when they see something that is ahead of what they have achieved, they can and maybe will try and copy or improve and take the idea further. This has been human nature for thousands of years. We learn and improve.

You take a look at some other guys who don't have the basic establishments for these things and they cannot even copy how a belt buckle is made because that require material engineers and mechatronic specialists who will be able to design or modify suitable machines to do the job. Then there is business side of how many units I can make for how much cost? This will be impacted by government provided infrastructure and stability. Big manufacturing industries inside the country is a big part but also require the science institutions which only few countries really have. Funding and investment is another piece. So they will be able to make these batteries in some time like China was able to eventually make some things with time.

If you are very talented, a quick look at the basic principles is already enough to take you the whole way to reverse engineering something. Some talentless ones might still fail even if they have everything they need.

The cathode materials have no bearing on how the battery is physically shaped. This batter may well have an NCA cathode inside.

The idea of the blade battery is to reduce the mass of the whole battery by not requiring structural elements to hold the cells.

All previous battery tech evolution was about reducing the casing weight, but that was misguided because you just recoup the weight reduction from weaker cell casing in the battery structural members.

Blade is an opposite approach, making the cell casing strong, and rigid enough to not need external structural support.

LFP cells were around too, just of very low quality.

Even, say, 5 year ago it was possible to make 170wh/kg cells by just using the same grade of graphite that went into high end NCM, and add 20wh more if you used good electrolyte mix comparable to ones used in NCM.

If it just becos such simple approach, Japanese and Korean will be making it to compete with BYD. But they are not able to.
