KOLKATA: Police in eastern India have arrested a local businessman for allegedly raping a US charity worker, an official said on Friday, as anger grows over the high incidence of sexual crime in the country.

Dinesh Burman, 40, was arrested on Thursday after an American woman lodged a complaint with police,” said Kaliappan Jayaraman, the police commissioner of Siliguri town, in West Bengal state, where the crime allegedly occurred.

The US national, in her 50s, said Burman, a land broker and businessman, raped her on April 15 and threatened her with violence if she approached the police, Jayaraman told AFP over the telephone.

Siliguri, which lies in the foothills of the Himalayas, is located 460 kilometres north of state capital Kolkata.

Protests have raged across India following the fatal gang-rape of a medical student on a moving bus in the capital New Delhi last December, which provoked thousands of people to take to the streets in anger.

The abduction and serial rape of a five-year-old girl in New Delhi last week further fueled public fury, prompting Indian premier Manmohan Singh to demand a collective effort to “root out this sort of depravity from our society”.

it is indeed a sad incident.Indian authorities must take serious and strong actions to deal with this issue,as such events are really creating a very bad image of India throughout the world:hitwall:

There is no place for rapists in my country! Good job by the media in highlighting such incidents. They will make sure that public will respond to such crimes.

Public is responding boldly and effectively,I am pleased to see the strength and quick response of public but Indian government still needs to make effective laws and proper implementation to deal with such issues

Unfortunately, the article just mentions a few lines of this incident and then goes back to other incidents that are unrelated to this one.

Why is the media messed up like this?

I really think we should stop posting these. There's more than a billion people in India. There's countless of these cases even if it's just less than 1 percent of overall crime.

IT's not a reflection on India, it's just that there's more people.
