A partial burka ban proposal announced by officials in Germany's ruling coalition could prohibit the full body garment from being worn in schools, universities, nurseries, public offices, or while driving.

The partial ban has received the support of conservatives from German Chancellor Angela Merkel's governing bloc, but still needs parliamentary approval to become law.

The proposal is considered a compromise as it would ban the burka only in certain settings, as opposed to a total ban like the one in place in France — favored by some of Germany's right-wing politicians.

"We reject the full veil - not just the burka but the other forms of full veil where only the eyes are visible," said Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere on Friday, according to the BBC.

"It doesn't fit in with our open society. Showing the face is a constituent element for our communication, the way we live, our social cohesion. That is why we call on everyone to show their face," he continued.

"Whoever wants to work in public service cannot do so while wearing the full veil."

The minister's comments echoed the sentiments of Merkel, who said recently that "a fully covered woman has little chance of integrating in Germany."

Court verdict: no niqabs in German school
A student in the German town of Osnabrück won't be allowed to wear her veil to class. The decision comes at a time of heated discussion concerning a nation-wide burqa ban in Germany.

The student, who insisted on wearing her niqab to school, has been denied by a local administrative court. The Sophie Scholl night school in Osnabrück in the northern German state of Lower Saxony had originally accepted the student but reversed its decision when it became clear how she wanted to dress in class.

On Friday, the student had appealed to the Osnabrück Administrative Court. The case was heard just three days later on Monday. Things moved fast because, as a court spokesperson said, "every school day counts."

The court had ordered the woman to appear in person at the hearing on Monday to defend her reasons. When she didn't do that because of the media attention the case attracted, the court said its only possible action was to deny her claim.

Calling for a burqa ban

There are no details available on the student except for the fact that she's a German national and that she's not a minor anymore, which in Germany means she's at least 18. Night schools like Sophie Scholl are usually a way for adults to obtain a diploma they didn't manage to get when they went to school as teenagers.

The case comes at a time when the entire country, not just one school in Osnabrück, is discussing what kinds of veils Muslim women should be allowed to wear in Germany. The interior ministers of states governed by the conservative CDU called for a ban of the niqab and the burqa in public places. With a niqab, the wearer's face is completely veiled except for a small eye slit. The burqa is a blue garment that covers a woman's entire body, including her face. It only leaves a mesh screen to see through.

If you wanna save yourself and your culture that is

. .
I don't understand why things like burqa, niqab, burkini aren't fully banned in every european countries.....
And why do you think that these should be banned in the first place? In a democracy, people should be free to wear whatever they like.

They should ban it.

Every civilization can be encouraged to welcome diversity. But if the other side refuses to accept any compromise on their part and still expects the native civilization and culture to accept them in toto - they should be rejected.

The Sikhs, Hindus, Chinese (even last generation Pakistani) immigrants are great examples.

.
The irony is that if you look at pictures of South Asia or the Middle East from forty years ago you don't see any burkhas.
