Buddhist monks find Pakistan different from what int’l media projects

ISLAMABAD, May 24 (APP): The delegation of Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka Wednesday said they found Pakistani people peace-loving, hospitable and generous which is different from what international media projects..

Speaking at the concluding ceremony of ‘Vesak Mela’ celebrations arranged by National History and Literary Heritage (NH&LH) Division, the Buddhist monks said, “The hospitality, love and respect shown by Pakistani people won our hearts”.

“Preservation and maintenance of our sacred places by the officials is evident of the level of respect Pakistan has for our religious beliefs”, they said.

A delegation of around 40 buddhist monks and visitors from Sri Lanka headed by Professor N Gnanaratana reached Pakistan on Sunday to attend ‘Vesak Mela’ celebrations.

The Buddhists monks visited sacred places in Taxila and Takht Bai along with the officials of NH&LH Division to perform their religious rituals and departed for Sri Lanka after the concluding ceremony on Wednesday.

The officials of the division briefed the monks about the historical significance of these places.
Talking to APP, Head of Sri Lankan Buddhist monks’ delegation, Professor N Gnanaratana said, “Pakistan is a real friend of Sri Lanka who always stood with it in conflicted situations, natural calamities and every hour of need which the whole Sri Lankan nation acknowledge and admire”.

He appreciated the arrangements made by the officials of NH&LH Division for their visit to the Buddhist spots and said both the countries have many cultural similarities and great love and respect for each others religions.

He said, “Pakistan is true friend of Sri Lanka and this is not only the observation of Sri Lankan government but the ordinary people also think in this way”.

He said, “Whenever there is any debate or issue at international forums, Pakistan has always raised its voice in favour of Sri Lanka”.

The female Buddhist monks including P Dhammanande, M Seelapriga and A Summanaseeli, they said, “We came to Pakistan for the first time and received great respect and love from not only the officials but also local people of the Buddhist sites.

They said, “We are impressed with the arrangements of this festival in Pakistan, warm welcome by the officials and hospitality of Pakistani people. It is just like we are at our second home”.

High Commissioner of Sri Lanka for Pakistan, Maj General ® Jayanath C P Lokuketagodage thanked the Advisor to Prime Minister on NH&LH, Irfan Siddiqui, Federal Secretary, Engineer Aamir Hasan for arrangement of ‘Vesak Mela’.

He hoped that next year Buddhists from other countries will also be the part of Vesak celebrations.

The Vesak day is celebrated to commemorate events of significance to the Buddhist of all traditions: the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Buddha.
The Vesak festival, also known as Buddha Purnima (full moon) and Buddha Day, is a holiday observed traditionally on different days in all Buddhist countries of Asia and other parts of the world.

More Sri Lankan Buddhists seem to be visiting Pakistan more often these days, Hopefully with more stabilization in the political front, It will increase to considerable numbers.. Pakistan officially celebrated the Vesak festival for the first time this year

One person can have different experience especially when you are a guest and people are working hard to make your experience as good as it can be. Nobody can deny that you can get best of the treatment in Pakistan if they consider you as a friend and would like to treat you, there are many Indians especially from Bollywood who enjoyed a similar experience. He would have got different treatment like Mashal Khan has somone rumored he did some kind of Blashphamey.

True.. In a certain sense, But i can vouch personally as an individual who had visited Pakistan in the last decade twice.. On the ground ordinary Pakistani's tend to be some of the most hospitable people i have met.. And i have met a cross section of that society in my work trips.. From company executives to small scale lubricant dealers, They are respectful and wonderfully genuine people

Again, it all depends. India is same too. When you are visiting as an executive you are mostly meeting affluent and going to places where these people visit, with some exception. Your experience will change if you get into wrong wise or Army, Religious Mullahs etc.

Been to India as an ordinary tourist many a time, And traveled quite widely there.. Have very mixed experiences.. At all places.. India is a land of extremes in every aspect and it's the same when it comes to the attitude of it's populace.. I find Kerala people to be the most down to earth cosmopolitan people out there and Telegu's not far off.. People in Delhi tend to be nouvo rich rude brats without class, Tamils have a stick up their arse most of the time(There are exceptions) Bombay is a world unto itself love the vibrancy of it's people, Punjabi's are the most friendly especially Sikhs.. So it's a mix bag by large unlike Pakistan of my experience

It is possible, again the experience will be different if you fit into the group you are travelling to. Indianans have many shortcomings. Tamils have strong regional feeling and typically are not very friendly to even fellow Indians. I was in Chennai and one could clearly feel the difference of treatment based on local vs non-locals. The same local thing can be found in some other places but feel TN is little too much. If you expect everyone to be friendly to you, it might not happen, if you expect the people who invited to be friendly, yes very much.

Would love to visit Hunza valley and the Pakistan Himalayas one day to hopefully see a snow leopard.. The biggest culture shock that i had in Pakistan was a near absence of Women in public spaces, Especially outside the main cities.

Pakistan is historically speaking a bastion of Buddhism. Glad to see Sri Lankan and in recent times South Korean and even Bhutanese monks coming to Pakistan. This is good not only for Buddhists, but also for the natives to learn about our history and culture. Buddhism for a long time has been a footnote in our history. There is however now a growing sense of realisation what importance the Indus and Gandhara region have to the development of Buddhism.
