Two persons, including a BSF jawan, were killed and ten injured during a clash between the border guards and villagers at South Ramnagar near here.
The clash took place when the BSF personnel were chasing smugglers during a routine patrol in the area near the Indo-Bangla border last night, BSF DIG B S Rawat has said.

Among the injured were nine villagers and a BSF man, the BSF DIG said.

When the BSF jawans started chasing the smugglers, the villagers attacked the security men with lathis, the DIG said.

The BSF initially fired in the air to disperse the mob and then opened fire in "self defence" in which a villager, Ismail Mia, was killed and nine villagers were injured, the DIG said.

A BSF personnel, Sandeep Kumar, was then lynched by the villagers, the DIG said.

IG (Police control) N C Das also confirmed that a villager and a BSF jawan were killed in the violence.

The injured were rushed to G B hospital where nine of them were admitted. The BSF man was discharged after first-aid, hospital sources said.

Meanwhile, Bhanu Mia, the brother of the villager who was killed in BSF action, in an FIR lodged at West Agartala police station said that the border guards opened fire after picking up a quarrel with them when they were resting near a pond.

Additional forces were rushed to the area, the police said.

But the name of the villagers suggest to be illegal Bangladeshis.

Whoever they are, this sets a very dangerous president. !!
Not president, its precedent. Gosh do a spell check or google if your not sure. Such gross mistakes set a bad example for younger members.

Smugglers on both side of the border are from nearby villages and may have village support

Some of them are armed

They are often in groups and travel at night

They have shown they can and will attack border guards, not just indian but BD border guards have been attacked in the past too

So all this news shows is that BSF is justified in use of force against smugglers atleast on some occasions and we must support BSF is this sensitive job where international relations, human rights of our own people and safety of our jawans are involved.

RIP to the departed. Power to BSF.

Exactly. Some of these settlements are of smuggler groups who are hand in glove with the entire chain of suppliers and traffickers. B.S.F must be given full autonomy to deal with this scum the way they see fit. Give free hand in using bullets.

WTF, they were a patrol team with sufficient ammo, they could have killed all those 'villagers' attacking them and fled the scene or radioed in for backup before more attackers came.......
Why didn't they open fire 'generously' when they came under attack?....afterall it's in self defence......
