Following the Australian sheep culling episode, thousands of Australian cows are due to arrive in Pakistan, The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) reported on Monday.
The report quoted a programme named Four Corners which revealed that an agribusiness company was preparing to send a shipment of nearly 3000 breeder cows, 2000 of which were destined for Pakistan.
Australias Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) deputy secretary Philip Glyde said the department couldnt guarantee that the animals will not be culled.
Commenting on the Australian sheep culling issue, Animals Australia campaign director Lyn White said why would you send further animals into a country before you have completed your investigation into what happened to a shipment that has been horrendously treated?
Background
A shipment of Australian sheep had arrived in Pakistan in September after being turned away by Bahrain for being infected with scabby mouth disease.
Pakistan had culled around 7,000 of those sheep in a dispute over whether or not they were sick. The court halted the process when the action was challenged. However, they resumed culling after the legal challenge was withdrawn.
Australian High Commission in Islamabad had expressed shocked over the move.
Were surprised, were shocked by what is apparently the resumption of the culling and were trying to find out what is happening, he told AFP.
A United Kingdom-based laboratory, the Pirbright Institute, had certified that the sheep were fit for human consumption and disease free.
