British public donates $45m
* Government doubles assistance to 64m pounds
LONDON: The British public have donated 29 million pounds ($45 million) in aid to Pakistan, charity officials said on Monday while the government has doubled its assistance to 63 million pounds.
After a slow start, blamed on a lack of awareness about the crisis, the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which coordinates humanitarian appeals from a dozen charities, said donations from the public were growing. This is a tragedy unfolding in slow motion with new areas still being flooded and the threat of deadly waterborne diseases stalking millions of survivors, said DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley. The UK public are leading the way and shaming politicians across the world to do what they have to do, Gormley said, adding, We want the rest of the international community to back that sustained giving.
Oxfam Humanitarian Director Jane Cocking said on Monday that floods in Pakistan are one of the worst and most complex she has ever seen. Commenting on donations form ordinary Britons, she said the British public was shaming politicians across the world with its generosity.
The British Secretary for International Development Andrew Mitchell appreciated the efforts of Pakistan government to tackle flood devastation and said no government could have done alone given the massive scale of the destruction. Mitchell said UK has already doubled the amount of aid it is giving to Pakistan to 64 million pounds.
THANK YOU CITIZENS OF THE U.K !!!
