British n-sub in India for naval war game.

New Delhi, Oct 7: India will be looking at learning lessons on operating a nuclear-powered boat apart from honing its anti-submarine warfare skills when its navy exercises with their British counterparts in the Arabian Sea off Goa beginning Saturday.

India is lining up INS Shankush, a Shishumar class diesel electric submarine, while the British have brought their Trafalgar class nuclear-powered submarine for the week-long Konkan exercise, which will focus purely on anti-submarine warfare manoeuvres, Indian Navy spokesperson Commander P.V.S. Satish said here Friday.

Indian Navy will also deploy INS Betwa, a Brahmaputra class frigate, and an IL-38 maritime patrol aircraft during the exercise, he said.

The frigate and the aircraft will do the searching and tracking of the submarines in the exercise.

Apart from the nuclear-powered vessel, the British navy has got its auxiliary ship RFA Diligence, that usually handles support and supplies for the submarine, for the exercise.

The two sides will also exchange crews, apart from carrying out a harbour-based four-day wargaming at Goa before heading to the seas for the four-day maritime warfare manoeuvres.

The two navies are meeting for the Konkan series of maritime exercises after a two-year gap. For the last exercise in 2009, Indian Navy had sent its ships to Britain.

Good going...would give IN operation exposure with working with nuke subs

And to imagine the that the US 7th Fleet was in '71 in the same waters ( Arabian Sea ) for an entirely different reason !

Times surely have changed ....

Actually it was the task Force 74 (TF-74), a part of the seventh fleet which was in the Bay of Bengal in 1971 and not the Arabian Sea.

Also, USN super carriers have been visiting the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea regularly (a number of times every year).
