LONDON: A British Member of Parliament and former adviser to Benazir Bhutto has urged the Pakistan government to refer the use of drone strikes to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Rehman Chishti MP, who is the Member of Parliament for Gillingham and Rainham, has recently raised concerns in the UK Parliament about the high number of civilian casualties resulting from drone strikes and questioned whether their use should be suspended as they feed anti west feelings, says a press release issued by his office.
He has also challenged the British government over allegations that the UK has shared locational intelligence with the United States leading to drone strikes in Pakistan. The British government has so far refused to confirm or deny that this is taking place.
The MP said: The Pakistan government has publicly condemned drone strikes, which has killed hundreds of civilians. Serious questions have been raised and there is evidence to suggest that their use may be in contravention of international law and a violation of Pakistans sovereignty. I am calling on the government of Pakistan to refer this matter to the International Court of Justice so that we can learn who is responsible for these civilian deaths, settle the legality of drone strikes in Pakistan and allow justice to be served.
