The NSA spying scandal created a need for a cyberspace hidden from the prying eyes of American spooks. While countries like Germany are trying to create a secure cyberspace built on current infrastructure, a consortium of BRICS companies are working to create a "new Internet". The Hindu, reports that Brazil is building a "BRICS cable" that will create an independent link between Brazil, South Africa, India, China and Russia.

The length of the fiber-optic cable will be over 21 thousand miles, making it one of the most ambitious underwater telecom projects ever attempted. The cable will run from the Brazilian town of Fortaleza to the Russian town of Vladivostok via Cape Town, Chennai and Shantou.

The main goal of the project is to create a network inaccessible to the NSA, bypassing all parts of internet infrastructure located outside BRICS countries. While this ambitious project certainly has potential, it also has some inherent weaknesses. So far, it is not clear whether the project company has enough funds to finish it, although the Brazilian president has voiced her support for the cable's construction. It remains to be seen whether this political support will generate financial support from Brazil or from other countries. Another weakness is that the cable will only protect the data sent through it and won't help the people who use US-based web services like Google, Facebook or Yahoo because American IT companies have been willingly helping the NSA spy on their users. The last significant weakness is that the cable will still be vulnerable to eavesdropping by specialized American military units which learned how to intercept communications on underwater cables during the Cold War. It is possible that constant checking and patrolling of the cable will be required in order to protect it from US intelligence agencies or from the American military. All these weaknesses can be overcome through cooperation of BRICS political leaders, IT companies and maybe militaries. In today's world, privacy is an expensive privilege but BRICS countries are one of the few ones able to pay for it.

India will obviously try to undermine this project and help the Yankees.

Can't trust India in the BRICS. Always get the feeling India is merely a spy for the Yanks inside BRICS.

Just look at how India abandoned Russian weapons and switched over to the Yankee weapons.

Russia was betrayed for no apparent reason.

Now you see why we block Google, Youtube, Facebook! These companies are tool of America to control other country population. Stupid countries would allow their citizen information accessible to these web companies.

How you eavesdrop on fiber-optic without physical access?

They wouldnt need to tap in to the physical cables, have you seen the recent news on how NSA is grabbing data from Google, Yahoo, etc supposedly without even accessing their servers?

Grabbing of data from Google, Yahoo is probably data from the mail service they provided to the public. Grabbing from the fiber cable is different type of data. I think they either have access to the end network equipment, or they have physical access and install a repeater cum eavesdropper directly on the cable.

We all know the US will bribe the weakest link and get all the access they want now who is the closest to kissing US ***?? :-):usflag:

China can use this network to spy on India. This project is a failure to begin with. If at all, India should jointly develop highly secure encrypted networks to communicate with Brazil, Russia and S Africa.

Lol, do people actually know the meaning of "Internet" anymore?

Internet is a term for any network that cross access network globally (including the US)

Let say for this example being BRICS can create their own network without the need to use any US patent (which 56% of tech are estimated), even if they could do it, you can only called it a BRICS network and you can only access network within BRICS country, if you want to be called Internet, then you also needs to access anything outside the BRICS country, and no one can lay cable "globally" so at some point, there will be wireless interception if you want to access world information, and you can hack that opening

That is the trade off of networking, if you want accessibility, you will going to be hack some day, if you want total Internet security, don't use the internet

BRICS is only the start. More countries will join as no one trust that terrorist Yankee regime. Only a subhuman half-baked Viet like you will worship the white man.
