Harpoon can't be vertically launched. It takes up a shit ton of space on ships with quad launchers. Type 052D already don't have anymore quad launchers like Type 052C has.

The aim is not to defeat China, that is not possible but to make sure that counter damage to China would be extensive enough so that China will rethink about its strategy of taking over Taiwan in the future by force.

So countries are not free to purchase weapons they deem necessary for their security? So you think you are smarter/wiser than leaders from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia , UAE etc ? Countries who are among the most developed and wealthy in the world?

Harpoons don't bring new abilities to Taiwan. They already have their own supersonic Hsiung Feng III anti-ship missiles. More American imports = less indigenous production. So it balances out.

For the Chinese government reunification is a matter of political legitimacy. So it has to happen sooner or later. I prefer later.
