MOSCOW, March 14 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered his military to start the withdrawal of the main part of Russia's forces from Syria, saying that the Russian military intervention had largely achieved its objectives.

Putin, at a meeting in the Kremlin with his defence and foreign ministers, said the pullout should start from Tuesday. He also ordered that Russia intensify its role in the peace process to end the conflict in Syria.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin had telephoned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to inform him of the Russian decision. (Reporting by Denis Dyomkin; Writing by Christian Lowe)

Mr Putin also said that Russia's Hmeimim airbase and the its port at Tartus would continue to operate as normal.

I said it before, Russia is impoverished and can't sustain lengthy operations, at least not on the level of USA or Saudi Arabia. I wan't to see Syrian faces now, especially the ones who doubted Saudi achievements in Yemen. At least we sustained consistent pressure that culminated in liberation of most of Yemeni lands and the surrender and submission of the Houthis.

The question of what did Russia achieve is obvious, once you think about it. They probably got concessions out of the US and its allies, which was their entire goal to begin with.

As I've said many times, the Russians don't give a crap about Assad. He was a tool, a means to an end, nothing more.

What were the concessions? One can only guess, but id wager that it involved their continued presence in Syria (their military base) and probably Ukraine ad well.

To me, this is a Russian victory, because now, they won't have to worry about who'll win the war. It's also a big blow to Assad.

If I am not wrong, many had forecasted end of american life after the collapse of Lehman brothers (and many others) and the great recessions... but look now, it is only the US who has came out even stronger than before..I must say US is the most and only resilient power hence the only super power nation on this planet!..all major currencies in the world are struggling to keep pace with dollar even their economies are growing faster than the US!

the insane bloodshed should be stopped in Syria whether those are rebels or Syrian forces. The matter of fact is innocent Muslims are dying for ulterior motives of both sides claiming to be doing same in the name of Allah. One getting help from Ruskies and others from Russia/ Israel.
