Saddam wasn't secular, not by a long shot. He was an Arab nationalist, but not secular. He considered shias as heretics and killed hundreds of thousands of them. Sunni Islam for him was the only Islam and the only religion that mattered. There is a differnece between a nationalist and a secular leader who wants to seperate the church and the state. In all his time in power, Saddam used religion to his own benefit, just like the mullahs in Iran.

Do you ever watch discovery channel and National Geographic? Cause i do and there was an interresting little program which discribes the live of saddam. Beside that they interviewed the guy that suppose to crack saddam for info, He was an FBI Agent. He has spend over 6 months with saddam and saddam even said that he was closer to him then his own sons. At the last day of the of the FBI agent duty saddam said he was an secularist and that state and religion should not be mixed. He discribed Al-qaida as religion fanatics and zealot he didnt like! Also he said that he didnt had nuclear weapons but it was all a bluff to scare iran, he discribes iran as his biggest enemy

You guys gotta understand the tribal and secterian reality of a lot of these arab countries + Afghanistan. Central govts and regimes mean jack to them. They answer to their tribes and religious sects. Look at Libya, Yemen and even AFG (Hazara versus Pashtun versus Tajik).

Assad is the best thing for a country like this. He's secular and firm. Bring in the "Muslim Brotherhood" types and the country will become an Al Quida stronghold within months. On top of that, they will start fighting each other in a decade ALL OVER AGAIN.

I think we should invade the country and add it to Turkey.

Azerbaycan should take back Karabagh and then unite with Turkey.

Iranian azeris should also gain independance and the lands add to Turkey.

Cypruss should be added too.

We should form a Turkmen-state in Northern-iraq also to be added to Turkey.

Yea, Turkey was taking orders from Washington in 2005 when US wanted to invade Syria too. I guess there was some kind of miscommunication because it was Turkey who blocked such a scenario....
