A Senate panel voted to give the US president the authority to use military force against Bashar al-Assad by ten votes to seven.

The full Senate is expected to vote on the measure next week.

The resolution would permit Mr Obama to order a limited military mission against Syria, as long as it does not exceed 90 days and involves no American troops on the ground for combat operations.

The vote marked the first time US politicians have authorised military action since the October 2002 votes giving George W Bush the power to invade Iraq.

At a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden, Mr Obama said the western powers must mean what they say. ‘My credibility is not on the line,’ he said. ‘The international community’s credibility is on the line.

‘America and Congress’s credibility is on the line, because we give lip-service to the notion that these international norms are important.’ The strike is expected to cost the US a significant amount.

‘We have looked at the different costs,’ said defence secretary Chuck Hagel. ‘It would be in the tens of millions of dollars, that kind of range.’

You're not worried about Russia attacking you????....

No offence man, but I don't understand you Arabs. Why the hell would you facilitate an attack on ANOTHER Arab country? Wasn't Iraq, Yemen, Libya enough? They will come after you as well one day...

A question came up from Russia in hearing. The General responded that Russia's conventional army is a joke.

Russia attacking SA? Only a delusional conspiristorial (mostly from Iran) lunatic would think such idiocy will occur.

It's not an attack against another Arab country, It's an attack against a criminal regime in Syria supported by another criminal regime in Iran, so it's a double win for Arabs actually.

Good decision by U.S.A. This is very important to bring peace in Syria.

Like they're bringing peace in your north-west?

That's what they said during Iraq. That they're fighting Saddam. Look how many civilians died there.

Syria and Iraq are completely different, there won't be any soldiers on the ground in Syria.

Another invasion to expand American interests.

It looks like One way traffic. No country, No alliance is even close to them...
No any alliance against them. So clearly one way traffic.... :coffee:

It doesn't really matter, what matters is the result of the full senate voting which will be next week I think.

Be interesting to see how the Russians will respond to this. They stand to lose their ally if they do nothing. But will they really confront the mighty U.S.? And what will the U.S. do if Russia do decide to joint the fight? WWIII?

Even if they vote against, Obama can still go without congress approval.
